Made In Abyss Plot

Riko, an orphaned girl from Orth, lives at the Belchero Orphanage. The Abyss is a mysterious, huge hole that descends deep into the ground. The Abyss is home to artifacts from long-gone civilizations. It is a popular hunting area for Cave Raiders who make dangerous and difficult descents into the pit filled with mist to find any relics. The “Curse of the Abyss”, a mysterious, potentially fatal malady that manifests upon ascension, can make it difficult to return from the Abyss. The curse’s effects are more severe the deeper one descends; very few have ever returned from the lower regions to share their stories. Legendary Cave Raiders are given the title of White Whistles. Riko’s mother Lyza is one such example. She was presumed to have died after making a “last descent” into The Abyss.

Riko longs to be a White Whistle like her mother. She discovers a robot that looks like a human boy in the Abyss’ first layer. She names him Reg. Riko and her friends manage to sneak Reg into Belchero, where they quickly welcomed him into their tight-knit group. A number of finds are made in the Abyss. These include Lyza’s White Whistle, pages of observations and discoveries she made, and a message probably for Riko stating that she is still at the bottom. Riko, determined to find her mother, says goodbye to her friends and secretly heads into the Abyss, with Reg as her companion.
