Aidan Gillen portrays Dr. J. Allen Hynek, a scientist and UFO researcher, who does not believe that extraterrestrial life is possible. In a post-WWII series, the Blue Book project was covered. The US Air Force launched it in the 1950s and 60s to examine UFO reports. Dr. Hynek collaborated with Michael Quinn, an Air Force veteran, to investigate sightings and prove “strange” things weren’t happening. As the case is investigated, Hynek begins to doubt his own thoughts. His research is intensifying now that he does not know the meaning of these sightings.
Based on a true story, the plot follows Dr. J. Allen Hynek, a gifted university professor who was hired by the US Air Force in order to investigate thousands of mysterious incidents codenamed Project Blue Book. At least 700 of these remain unsolved today. Each episode of Project Blue Book focuses on a particular documented incident (including a UFO) that occurred in one of America’s most mysterious times.

This episode was about Operation Mainbrace. This was a naval exercise that took place in September 1952. It involved eight NATO countries, including New Zealand.
There were 80,000 people on the sea, with 1,000 planes and 200 ships. Several UFOs were seen in the area during the Mainbrace maneuver, which was happening over a 12-day period.
