Shadow and Bone review & ending explained?
The new Netflix fantasy series Shadow and Bone offers a thrilling adventure that immerses viewers in the mysterious, Tsarist Russia-like world Ravka and its powerful “Grisha” warriors.
Alina, a Sun Summoner and fugitive, has been transformed into the potential savior for Ravka by the eighth episode. But as she confronts her greatest foe, Shadow and Bone ends with an all-out clash (and a dramatic cliffhanger) that viewers will be talking about for a long time.
Netflix’s Shadow and Bone has created a new fantasy obsession. The seven books are cumulative, and the first season Shadow and Bone ends with a slight shift into territory that Bardugo’s second book covers.
What does the Shadow and Bone ending mean for the characters moving forward? How did showrunner Eric Heisserer and the team approach building towards this finale?
Let’s look at what happened in the Shadow & Bone finale, and what this might mean for the future of the series.
Alina Fully Claims Her Power
Alina’s journey from being a real agent is the focus of Shadow. Season 1 sees her reclaim her power, both literally and metaphorically, from a manipulative man who wants to use her for his own ends. We’ve seen her refuse to use a magic ability she didn’t ask for and all of the responsibility that it entails. But here, in the face of death and danger, she accepts the Darkling’s claim over her, and her power, and her right to use it as she pleases.
She tells the Darkling that she may have needed him, just as she is about to stab him in the hand and release herself from his grasp. She strikes a power pose, glowing with light and is a legend as she defeats the monstrous Volcra to save her friends. It’s a moment of triumph for a lost girl who finally finds her voice.
Can the Darkling Survive in this World?
Yes, the Darkling still lives to smolder one more day.
It is not surprising that the Darkling survived his brutal encounter with a volcra. He eventually made it out of the Shadow Fold, looking very fashionable, but beaten and bedraggled. The shadow zombies who follow him seem to suggest that Aleksander has improved his skills since the flashback sequence in which he used merzost almost as effectively in “The Unsea” was not.
It is not clear what this means for his future plans. It is clear that the Darkling is furious at Alina’s decision to reject him as a partner and her decision to – according to him – betray their Grisha brothers by doing so. I suspect that he also dislikes Mal. My man, sorry not sorry. It seems very likely that he is on the hunt again for Alina, and will be doing so with the goal of regaining control of her powers, and the Fold.
The Shadow Fold Remains
Did you really think that the evil, dark, and unsettling death cloud of monsters would be destroyed in the first season?
Although Alina does not bring down the Shadow Fold, the Darkling does not get to use it to subjugate all other kingdoms to Ravkan (and, by extension, Grisha) rule. So it is still a win in terms of the end. He was also exposed as a murderous dictator, leveled Novokribirsk in West Ravkan, and animated an army of merzost shadow monsters that are both deadly and gross. Is he returning to the Little Palace to claim the throne? Is he on the hunt for Alina or something completely different?
Most people assume that Alina has died in the Fold by the end of “No Mourners”. However, other than a small group of Kaz, Inej and Jesper, most people don’t know that she is off to find a way for her powers to increase enough to face the Darkling and cut the darkness in half. Will the Darkling ever realize that she is still alive? Will she sense that he’s still alive? Keep watching. Sign up for our mailing list

What’s next for Mal and Alina? Season 2
My favorite romantic ship is heading off on a new adventure to find a way down the Shadow Fold, and the Darkling’s dream of making the world his own will.
Alina and Mal are very close in every sense of that word. They have embraced each other adorably as they face a new direction, literally and metaphorically. It feels like they can do anything together now that they have both come to terms with their feelings for each other and how willing they are to take risks – literally anything – in order to stay together. (Except for kissing, which is what the show seems to have left me wanting from next season.)
What’s the Sun Summoner Prophecy.
Alina Starkov’s ability to manipulate light makes her a Sun Summoner. This is an uncommon power that doesn’t fit into the existing Grisha hierarchy. (As is the Darkling, technically a Shadow Summoner.)
Sun Summoners were largely a rumor and legend. Many myths developed around them, including one that predicted the Shadow Fold would not collapse until a Sun Summoner was born to dismantle it. The Shadow and Bone aren’t very clear on this but the Fold has existed for more than 400 years. Many Ravkans believe Alina to be the only Sun Summoner who ever lived.
Shadow and Bone ending explained
The series ends with General Kirigan/the Darkling (Ben Barnes), capturing Alina, and binding her with a Grisha amplifier. This amplifies her abilities while giving him control of them. He holds Alina and uses his light-summoning skills to travel safely into the deadly Shadow Fold. He is able to use his Shadow-Summoner skills to expand the Fold and to destroy Novokribirsk as a show of force.
Alina manages to shake off Kirigan’s control (and the amplifier), and Kirigan is defeated and taken by one of the Flying Volcra who live in the Fold.
Alina manages to get the survivors onto the Fold skiff, where they make peace with each other before leaving Ravka. Kaz, Inej, and Jesper, master thieves (Freddy Carter and Amita Suman), are heading back to Ketterdam. Nina Zenik, an unlucky-in-love Heartrender, tags along in the hopes of finding work and rescuing Matthias (Calahan Skogman).
Alina (Archie Renaux), and Mal (Hypertext0_ Grishaverse Books) travel to Noyvi Zem, trying to escape detection. However, the series suggests they may be heading to Ketterdam, which could open the possibility of more crossovers between different characters, if there is a second season.
Leigh Bardugo, that “I think the end of this series pays respect to both sets of characters and where they might end up.”
What happened to the stag?
Shadow and Bone’s central storyline was the hunt for Morozova’s stag. This magical beast could increase the power of Grishas who hunt it down and use its antlers.
Mal and Alina manage to find it. However, Alina is unable to kill it. The Darkling arrives to kill the stag and place the amplifier on Alina. He is able to increase her power with the help of Fabrikator David (Luke Pasqualino) and (via a piece of antler in his hands) to control it, at least for now.
Alina, just like in the books, later realizes that the stag “chosen her” before it was killed. The conventional wisdom regarding amplifiers (basically the person who killed an animal gets the power) is incorrect. This realization, along with the appearance of the stag in a dream sequence, led to Alina realizing that the unsightly spiked ears disappear from her skin. However, she still retains the extra power.
Is General Kirigan/The Darkling still alive?
Indeed he is. The series’ final scene shows Kirigan, looking a little battered, emerging from the Shadow Fold. He is covered in scars and wounds from his encounters with the volcra. He turns around and whispers “follow” before he begins his journey. Along with strange, smoke-like soldiers eight feet tall, he snarls behind him.
It’s a very abrupt way to end the series. In fact, it’s a little bit of story from Bardugo’s second book, Siege & Storm. According to the author, it’s a strong push by the production team towards a desired second season.
She tells RadioTimes.com, “When I was writing Shadow and Bone I hadn’t published a book.” “I wasn’t sure if this book would sell.
“And so it was written in an extremely contained manner, even though I had notes from two other books in this trilogy. A lot of hubris is required if you want to be an author.”
“So I was lucky and found a publisher willing to take that chance, and let me go. In this instance, we were like “Let’s stack it.” We have the stories.”
These monsters that Kirigan encounters in the final scene are an important part of the book series and a serious threat moving forward. The shadow warriors, also known as nichevo’ya are created by General Kirigan/the Darkling using a prohibited Grisha magic “merzost” and will accompany him on future campaigns against Alina and the Ravkan throne.
The nichevo’ya, which are flying monsters that live in the Fold, are different from the volcra. They were transformed centuries ago from men by the Darkling. The nichevo’ya can only be summoned by the Darkling when they are needed. While the volcra hunt for food, the nichevo’ya do not need food, sustenance, or rest. It is believed that Kirigan’s encounter with the volcra awakened some part of him and gave him the ability to summon these new monsters.
It’s basically an army of immortal smoke monsters that can appear anywhere. It’s hard to imagine it causing so many problems.
Is there a Shadow and Bone Season 2?
Although there’s no official approval yet, the end of the series suggests that there will be a second season.
What happens to the Fold?
The vast and powerful darkness that is engulfing the land has just grown.
Alina worries that they might have made matters worse. Mal assures Alina that once she is stronger, they will return to save their people.
What Then Will Shadow and Bone, Book, End?
The overall story beats are the same but the ending of the book was mainly about Alina, Mal and the Darkling. Mal is thrown from the boat at the end of the novel. Alina leaps into the Fold to rescue him. Alina lets the others fight the volcra, while Mal and she escape to West Ravka.
The book closes with Mal and Alina on board a boat heading out to sea to find whatever is there.
What happens to Season 1 of Shadow and Bone?
We talked to Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux, about their characters and their inspirations.
In “No Mourners,” the final episode of Season 1, all our heroes finally come together on General Kirigan’s skiff. Alina is still being kidnapped by the Crows. Mal is a stowaway. Alina is now an antler-wielding stowaway. She is tied to the deck by the antlers of Morozova’s Stag and used to show the ambassadors from Fjerda, Shu Han, the extent of her powers.
After briefly demonstrating the Sun Summoner’s powers, the Darkling reveals the full extent of his own. He creates the Fold to engulf Novokribirsk and sets the volcra upon the opposing side. This is in revenge for General Zlatan’s treachery. The Darkling then briefly monologues to the ambassadors aboard, telling them that he intends to end the war by causing all other countries to submit to him. He now holds the ultimate weapon for mass destruction, the Fold.
