Season 3 of The Boys ending explained: Three tribes go to war

Season 3 Episode 8 opens with Homelander visiting Ryan, his superpowered son. Grace Mallory, ex-CIA Deputy Director, was there to help him. After Victoria Neuman gave Homelander the address in Episode 7, Ryan was finally located. Ryan initially reacted suspiciously to Homelander’s visit, but he soon changed his mind when Homelander forgave him for injuring Stormfront in Season 2. Attempts to notify Billy Butcher about Homelander’s arrival failed.

Starlight’s livestream from Vought Tower – where Starlight secretly filmed Homelander in order to get him to confess – goes viral. Vought International was forced to release Queen Maeve, imprisoned, out of Seven’s headquarters. Maeve appears to be sedated before she is moved to another place. However, as she is en route to her new safe house, she awakens and dispatches the armed guards that accompanied her. Maeve reunites at a shelter with Mother’s Milk and Kimiko.

The last trio return with the last dose of Novichok, a nerve agent powerful enough to put Soldier Boy to bed. Starlight heads to Hughie’s gas station in New York, after Starlight finds him. Hughie had been abandoned by Soldier Boy and Butcher following his death.

Why did Butcher do so? Butcher did this to stop Hughie taking more Temp-V. This experimental serum can cause severe brain damage after just five doses. Hughie had taken only four doses so Butcher was saving Hughie’s life by leaving him alone.

However, Starlight and Hughie reconciled on the return trip home before they reunited with Maeve. The group plans to travel to Vought Tower, i.e. The Seven’s headquarters are occupied by Soldier Boy, who has been killed by Homelander. They also plan to rescue as many innocent Vought employees as possible (so that they don’t get caught up in the Supe-dup crossfire). Hughie believes Butcher deserves to be saved.

Butcher and Soldier Boy are preparing for the confrontation with Homelander at The Boys’ main hideout. Soldier Boy shares his story with Butcher about becoming a Supe. His father’s ex-military colleagues helped Soldier Boy to enroll in Vought’s superhero program. Soldier Boy met his father for the first time to prove his power. His father then disowned him and told him that a true man would not cheat in his quest to gain strength. Ouch.

This conversation causes Soldier Boy to think twice about killing Homelander, aka Soldier Boy’s son. We found out this in the episode 7 final scene. Butcher seems to be able to win him back.

season 3 of the boys ending explained: is Black Noir dead?

season 3 of the boys ending explained: is Black Noir dead?

It would seem so, but let’s go back a bit to see why Homelander killed him.

Season 3 revealed how terrifying Black Noir was to Soldier Boy. They treated Soldier Boy extremely harshly in their time together as part of the superhero group Payback. Black Noir and the rest of Payback got tired of Soldier Boy’s dictatorial ways and devised and implemented a plan that saw Soldier Boy taken hostage by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Black Noir meets Homelander at Vought Tower, despite Soldier Boy being on the warpath, and wanting to kill all Payback members in retaliation. Noir convinces Homelander, fearing for his life, to kill Soldier Boy.

However, this is not true. Noir later confesses to knowing Soldier Boy was Homelander’s father when Homelander questions him about it. A furious Homelander, feeling betrayed, murders Noir by punching through Noir’s body with his fist and ripping his intestines. Homelander abandons Noir to die in The Seven’s meeting rooms. The Seven’s cartoon friends surround him as he goes.

It’s possible Noir survived. It’s possible for a character to miraculously return from the dead on screen. We don’t see Noir die. We are pretty certain that Noir has died due to his extensive injuries and Homelander’s presentation of his helmet and visor later to A-Train, The Deep and Ashley.

season 3 of the boys ending explained: are Soldier Boy and Maeve alive?

Hughie and his company attempt to persuade Butcher to stop attacking Vought Tower at The Boys’ headquarters. The plan is thwarted when Soldier Boy returns (he had stepped outside to get some fresh air) and Maeve turns against The Boys. Butcher, Maeve and Soldier Boy lock five more in a safe before they leave to stop Homelander once and for all.

Homelander, who criticizes A-Train and The Deep for not being the family he needed during the interim period, waits to see Soldier Boy. Homelander attempts to talk with Soldier Boy when he arrives with Maeve, Butcher, and Ashley. He even presents Ryan, much to the surprise of Butcher, as Soldier Boy’s grandchild in an attempt to win him over.

Soldier Boy doesn’t like it. He calls Homelander “disappointment”, a comment that mirrors Soldier Boy’s father’s earlier thoughts. He also attacks Homelander along with Maeve and Butcher. Ryan intervenes and uses his laser eyes against Soldier Boy. Soldier Boy retaliates and throws Ryan in a bookcase, angering Homelander, Butcher, and the latter who turns on Soldier Boy because he hurt his wife’s child. Butcher responds to the attack by a stunned Soldier Boy, who says that he “made an agreement” to protect Ryan. They fight it out while Homelander and Maeve engage in their own skirmish despite Homelander’s protestations.

Soldier Boy wins the battle over Butcher, and after incapacitating him, he goes to behead him using his shield. Starlight and Mother’s Milk arrive to help Butcher defeat Soldier Boy before he delivers the fatal blow. Frenchie, Hughie and Kimiko escaped from their temporary prison, and they raced to Vought Tower in search of a new plan. Starlight and Mother’s Milk will keep Soldier Boy busy, while Hughie searches Vought’s intercom to broadcast an order to evacuate the tower.

Kimiko and Frenchie discover a Vought laboratory to create a new neurotoxin, after Maeve has destroyed the Novichok dose back at The Boys’ headquarters.

It is a fierce battle that ensues, with Soldier Boy defeating Starlight, Butcher and Kimiko. Kimiko arrives late to the party to deliver the nerve agent that Frenchie, who was injured by Vought guards while he created the neurotoxin, had made. Starlight stands firm against Soldier Boy as Hughie, who is watching the action on a monitor, increases the brightness of the lights around them.

This superpowers Starlight, who hits a devastating blow to Soldier Boy. Starlight, Mother’s Milk and Kimiko keep Soldier Boy in check as they administer the neurotoxin. But Soldier Boy fights back and prepares for his nuclear blast ability to explode, which would kill all those inside Vought Tower.

Maeve defeats Homelander, even though she has lost an eye. She realizes that Soldier Boy can’t be stopped by anyone else. She rams into Soldier Boy and smashes them through the window at the top. The blast of Soldier Boy causes a nuclear explosion that reaches the New York City skyline, seemingly killing both.

A TV report claims that Maeve died in the nuclear explosion. Flash forward to a scene just a few seconds later. It turns out she is alive. Starlight meets Maeve and Elena in Starlight’s apartment. Maeve appears, however, with scars from her battle against Soldier Boy. She reveals that her blast resulted in her losing her powers. Maeve had previously revealed her desire to be normal, without any powers. But, she got what she wanted. After a touching goodbye to Starlight, she departs with Elena.

Soldier Boy isn’t dead either. As season 3’s finale draws to an end, we see Soldier Boy sedated being put back in cryostasis by Grace Mallory along with her armed personnel at an undisclosed place. This is likely not the last we will see of him.

SEASON 3 OF THE BOYS ENDING EXPLAINED: is Billy dying?

SEASON 3 OF THE BOYS ENDING EXPLAINED: is Billy dying?

Yes. Butcher, who has consumed too much Temp-V at this point, collapses after the battle with Soldier Boy, Homelander ends.

We skip to the next scene. Butcher is in hospital and is told that there’s nothing he can do to save himself. Butcher asks his doctor how long he is expected to live. He was told 12-18 months due to irreparable brain damage from the Temp V doses.

Although it’s a sad moment in Butcher’s life, he has nothing to lose by pursuing Homelander’s death once and for all. He will do everything he can to complete The Boys’ fourth season and possibly fifth. We will soon find out if there will ever be another season.

Butcher still has greater authority to stop other Supes from ending his inevitable demise. After Hughie and Frenchie, Kimiko, Mother’s Milk, and Kimiko have voted to add Starlight as their members following Hughie’s departure from The Seven, Butcher appears on the TV screen, where a new report is being shown.

SEASON 3 OF THE BOYS ENDING EXPLAINED: is Billy dying?

After Senator Bishop drowned in his swimming pool, Bob Singer, presidential candidate, has announced his new running mate (yeah we all know that The Deep killed him at Homelander’s request). Singer has chosen Victoria Neuman, Hughie’s former boss and another Supe, to shock the group. Butcher smiles wryly as he says, “Well, that b***h definitely has to go.” The Boys have two Supes that they need to get rid of before they can officially dissolve.

SEASON 3 OF THE BOYS ENDING EXPLAINED: what will Homelander and Ryan do now?

SEASON 3 OF THE BOYS ENDING EXPLAINED: what will Homelander and Ryan do now?

Butcher and Homelander prepare to fight after Soldier Boy and Maeve have been seemingly killed. Ryan interrupts Homelander and says he wants to go with Homelander. The scene reverses the roles of the season 2 finale, when Ryan was with Butcher and Homelander.

Homelander, who appears in the finale’s third scene, introduces Ryan to the fans at a fan gathering. Except for one Starlight fan who throws a plastic cup at Ryan’s head, everyone applauds. Homelander takes offense and uses his laser eyes on the man to blow him off. Janine’s stepdad – the one who was beaten by Mother’s Milk episode 7 – screams with joy when Homelander kills the Starlight fan. Homelander smiles, and Ryan’s face starts to smile as the camera pans downwards. It’s not good. This is not good.

There are many other points to be aware of from The Boys’ season 3 finale. But we will cover them in our next season 4 hub. According to Karl Urban, the star of The Boys, season four will begin filming in August. He also told Collider(opens new tab) that he was excited about this. We’re hoping to learn more about season 4.
