Molly Smith Meltzer created “Maid“, a Netflix series that premiered Oct. 1, 2021. Based on Stephanie Land’s memoir “Maid” (Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother’s Will to Survive), the story follows Alex (Margaret Qualley), who is a young mother to Maddy (Rylea Nevaeh Whittet) as she decides to leave Sean (Nick Robinson), but her troubles are just beginning.
Alex finds her voice as an author and takes on a housekeeper job in order to survive the first season. Alex is determined to move with Maddy to Missoula in Montana. However, a custody dispute with Sean and her difficult relationship with her mother Paula MacDowell make it difficult.
Alex is awarded a scholarship to the University of Montana and eventually makes enough money to start a new family with Maddy. Although Season 1 ends on a positive note, it is far from a happy one. Here’s how “Maid” Season 1 ends.
What happens at the end of Maid Maid ending explained

Season 1 ends with Alex and Sean fighting for custody. Alex’s future plans are thwarted when Alex’s mom Paula (Andie McDowell) refuses her to move to a different town with Maddy and she cancels her temporary no contact order against Sean.
Alex eventually accepts Sean’s admission to alcoholism and gives Sean full custody of their daughter. Paula eventually agrees to the move and she, Alex, Maddy and their daughter board a ferry to their new home.
Is Maid based upon a true story or fiction?

Yes, Land was forced to leave an abusive home and worked as a maid. Land was eventually accepted into the University of Montana’s Creative Writing Program. He is now a published journalist and author.
Alex’s life has become easier, but not easy.

“Maid” ultimately refers to three people who are trying to improve their lives — Alex, Paula and Sean. Although Alex ultimately gets what she wants, which is a chance to have a fresh start without Sean, Paula doesn’t give her everything she wanted. (More on that below). Alex knows that her journey is only the beginning.
She tells her writer’s circle that although she has a college scholarship, she is still able to make ends meet on government assistance and will still need to work part time as a housekeeper. Alex tells her group that many people wouldn’t bet against a single mother putting herself through college.
The Season 1 finale has many moments that highlight Alex’s progress but still have a lot to do. She returns the cashmere sweater that she borrowed from a wealthy client. Alex says she should keep the sweater, but the client insists that she return it. She vows to save enough money to purchase her own. Alex accepts the sweater after the client points out the $1,400 price. While working hard is admirable, it’s not easy to make a living. There are times when we need help and it’s okay to accept it.
Alex and Maddy hike up to the summit of the mountain that overlooks Missoula. Alex explains via voiceover that the hike is difficult and long, but the goal of reaching the summit will make it worth it. This is just like Alex’s journey to a better life. Alex tells her daughter that the giant “M” at the summit of the mountain stands for “Maddy.” Although it’s not true, that’s okay. Sometimes, we need to let our imaginations run wild to allow us to continue.
Paula shows us how fragile self-improvement is

Although Alex is making progress in her self-improvement journey, Paula’s end is what prevents it from becoming a happy ending.
“Maid,” Season 1, has focused on Alex and Paula’s complicated relationship. Paula is present for her granddaughter and daughter. Paula also struggles with many issues of her own. She loses her home, and she is forced to live in her car. Paula and Alex struggle with their pasts as well. Paula, Alex’s mother, was also an alcoholic and abusive woman when she was a child. She tried to give Alex a better life but failed — and she does it again in the final.
Paula is not going to find Micah the ideal partner. He is prone to drinking and is not emotionally available. Paula has cancelled her plans to travel to Missoula, especially for a man she doesn’t think is worth it. This is yet another instance when Paula is not there for her daughter. This is the final exchange between them. Paula asks Alex if she loves her. Alex says it, but Paula does not. Paula again puts her daughter’s needs first.
Alex’s mother-daughter relationship provides an example of the kind of relationship she would like to have with Maddy. There is a silver lining to this story, though. Alex and Paula don’t get their happy ending.
Sean does the right thing in the end

Alex’s ex-boyfriend Sean also tries to improve himself even though it takes him a lot longer to do so. Sean also wants to learn from his parents’ relationships in order to be a better parent for Maddy. Sean admits to Alex in the Season 1 finale that he has a drinking disorder. He says that when he is with Maddy, all that comes to mind is his next drink. This is just like how his mother behaved around him.
This gives Sean the drive to make a change. He realizes the negative impact he is having on Maddy and drops his custody suit. This allows Alex and Maddy to leave the state to start a new life. Sean must give up custody of Maddy in the end to be able to have a relationship.
As Alex heals from her abuse, she starts to envision a new life with Maddy in Missoula, Montana. This is the same place where she was accepted to college. The show’s big question is whether Alex can move or stay in Washington, where Sean still holds partial custody of Maddy. This is the final installment. We will see if the mother and her daughter make it to Missoula.
Alex opens her own cleaning company.

Alex helped a single mother clean her home by doing her own cleaning. Although the client admitted that it was more work than she expected and that she couldn’t afford extra hours, Alex stayed late to help her clean the house. The mom recommended Alex to her hoarder support group and Alex was able to get several new clients.
Alex is excited about the new venture and has started teaching creative writing therapy classes. We see her progress since Sean’s departure as she leads the class and helps other domestic violence shelter residents. She seems to have everything in her stride before heading to Montana where she will continue to clean houses while she attends college.
Paula chooses to remain in Washington with her new boyfriend.

After learning that Paula was living in her car last episode, Alex watches her mother’s day in a Walmart parking garage. The series is a large part about Alex’s relationship with her mom. She says that she has been taking care of her mother since she was six years old. Alex is moving and wants Paula to join her. She’s worried that no one will care for Paula once she’s gone.
Paula declines the offer because her family has lived in Washington for generations. In typical Paula fashion, she skips a doctor’s appointment to work a shift at her job selling glass art with Micah, her husband. Paula is still in denial when Alex confronts them in the Walmart parking lot. She claims that she lives in her car because it’s fun being nomadic. She agrees to supervise Maddy with her dad. When things get rocky, she manages it well and brings Maddy back to Alex.
Paula tells Alex she is going to Montana with Maddy and Sean after the incident with Sean. However, the decision does not stick. Since Micah kicked out his wife, she’s going to stay with Micah. Alex is disappointed that her mother has entered another unhappy relationship. However, she does not change her plans to support Paula. Instead, she leaves for her new life with Maddy.
Sean relinquishes his custodial rights to Maddy.

The episode begins with Alex still fighting it out with Sean at the courts. There are less than a week before her summer semester in Montana. Regina, her friend and high-powered lawyer served Sean with a motion to restrain her. However, Alex claims that Alex is lying about his abuse of her. Instead, a second hearing will be held over custody rights. This hearing is similar to episode 2. Alex can’t leave the state until then with Maddy, putting her at risk of losing her spot at school.
Alex asks Hank, her father to testify that Sean abused her. Although he tried to bond with his daughter, Hank is more close to Sean than he was last season. Hank is a recovering alcoholic who has been Sean’s casual sponsor. Sean kept in touch with Hank even after Alex asked him to. This led to Hank witnessing an emotionally abusive and one-sided fight between Sean and Alex, where Sean shouted at Alex for refusing to eat dinner.
Hank refuses, not surprisingly, to testify against Sean. Alex points out the emotional abuse that he witnessed and Hank makes excuses for Sean, saying it was just an argument. As Alex learned earlier in the season, Hank had been abusive to Paula’s mother when she was a child. His decision is consistent with his past. Alex severed all ties to her father over this.
Everything changes once Sean has his court-ordered visitation with Maddy. He yells at her when she throws a tantrum. Alex hears him explain to Alex that he hadn’t had a drink for 24 hours and that if Maddy was with him, he would have brought the toddler along to get a drink. He does not want to do this to her so he gives Alex full custody.
Alex and Maddy move from Colorado to Montana.

Alex takes her belongings from the shelter and Sean’s trailer to the end. They say good-bye and Alex promises that he’ll visit her whenever he likes. Sean also promises to return the favor once he is sober. Alex stops by Regina’s while he is out of town and returns the sweater she bought in the middle of the season. Regina allows her to keep the $1,400 sweater.
The money tracker ends the season. It has shown Alex how quickly her little housecleaning and government assistance earnings are spent. Maddy and Alex then board the ferry, and it changes to a miles tracker. The screen then flashes back at Alex’s last day in group therapy. She shares her most happy day exercise. Instead of telling us about a day in our past, it tells us about Maddy and Alex’s trip to Missoula. They hiked up Sentinel Mountain, and looked over their new town.
We can hope for Maddy and Alex’s future in Montana because of the hopeful, sentimental ending to Alex’s story. Alex’s mother, Margaret Qualley, believes that the mom will build a wonderful life in Montana.
“I thought it was beautiful. Alex is the only person I trust. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t believe in Alex. She is so strong, ambitious, and kind. She said, “I have no doubt that she’ll continue fighting.”
This beautiful ending scene appears to be the end for Alex’s story in Maid. It has been described as a miniseries. Molly Smith Metzler, the creator of , has stated that could continue. (opens new tab) will either show Alex’s Montana life or follow a new domestic worker.
The end

Alex decides to go pick up Paula but notices that Paula still has her car. Paula won’t be leaving, but she will stay with Mical who has kicked his wife out. Alex and Paula hugged before Alex left.
Alex and Maddy finally board the ferry.
