When Will Avatar 2 Release Date?

Avatar now has a title – Avatar The Way of Water. We also have our first glimpse at the long-awaited sequel. The teaser trailer debuted at CinemaCon, April 27, 2022. The title was also revealed. The trailer was then released online on May 9, 2019. You can see it here. Although it lacks any actual plot, it is packed with stunning visuals.

In March 2022 Steve Asbell, President at 20th Century Studios, said that the sequel “will blow people away”. He added: “You’re just not ready for what Jim [Cameron] is doing.”

Cameron said at CinemaCon he was “hard at work finishing the film”. Cameron has previously mentioned that the decision to place the majority of the movie underwater was one of many reasons it took so long.

Cameron told that the process sounds “kind of crazy” and shared his plans for the sequel. “It’s crazy, Avatar wouldn’t have made this much money.

Cameron is the director who made two of the highest-grossing films of all time, Avatar, and Titanic. While some may wonder if anyone wants Avatar 2, right now, they should not bet against Cameron.

Returning star Zoe Saldana teased that it would be worth the wait, with a strong response to just twenty minutes of footage.

“I get choked up just thinking about it. I was only able to see 20 minutes of the second installment right before last year’s year ended, and was completely speechless. She enthused, “I was moved to tears.”

“It’s an adventure you won’t forget, so you have to prepare yourself.”

It seems like the sequel will finally arrive in cinemas in December 2022, as we touch every piece of wood around.

The sequel will arrive this year and it will kickstart a series of sequels every year until Avatar 5 in December 2028. We won’t get ahead of ourselves, so let’s focus on Avatar 2 for now.

This is the definitive guide to the delayed sequel to James Cameron’s blockbuster.

Avatar 2 Release Date: When will Avatar The Way of Water hit cinemas?

To make a long story brief, Avatar 2 will finally be released December 16, 2022. This release was delayed from December 2021 because of the ongoing global health crisis.

Filming for the sequel began in 2017. However, given that the movie combines live-action with motion capture elements, it is not surprising that it took so long. Cameron announced in September 2020 that they had “100% completed” Avatar 2 and around 95% on Avatar 3.

Cameron stated in April 2022, that he was putting the “final touches” on the sequel. Everything seems to be on track for December’s release. FINALLY.

Cameron has been busy working on three more movies in recent years, considering that there are still many to be made. Due to the young cast, he said he had already shot some of Avatar 4.

Variety reported that he said, “Anything that needed to be done with a particular actor, we did all of the scenes for 2 & 3 together – and a bit of 4,”

“I had no choice but to shoot the children out. They can be six years old in the middle story, on page 25 of movie 4. Also, I had to have everything before that, and everything after that, but we’ll get there later.”

Avatar 2 – Why is it taking so long?

Here’s the complete story about the long, drawn-out adventure of the sequel to the screen. It seems absurd that Avatar 2 was to be released in December 2014 and Avatar 3 would have been released in December 2015.

After several delays, filming was supposed to begin on Avatar 2 April 2016. But April never came and filming stopped. It was announced in January 2017 that the motion-capture elements of the film would begin by August 2017. However, the actual filming began in September.

After the announcement of the fourth Avatar movie, the entire project was pushed back with Avatar 2 scheduled for December 2017 (with the rest planned for 2018 and 2019 presumably). Cameron blamed delays on the “very complicated” writing process.

Next, in January 2017, Avatar 2 was again delayed. This was due to the assumption that it got scared after Star Wars: The Last Jedi had moved from May 2017 to December 2017.

After Fox’s takeover, the sequel was originally scheduled for release in December 2020. However, Disney moved it to December 2021. This brings us up to the current delay.

Cameron was totally chilled about delays throughout it all. He stated that there was a seven year gap between Terminator and Terminator II: Judgment Day. There was also a seven year gap between Alien and Aliens.

Trailer for Avatar 2

The teaser trailer premiered at CinemaCon. It was only released in cinemas that featured Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.

Avatar 2 title – Say hello to Avatar the Way of Water

As we have already mentioned, Avatar 2 now goes by the official title Avatar: The Way of Water.

BBC News reported in November 2018 that the planned Avatar sequels would be called Avatar, The Way of Water and Avatar, The Seed Bearer and Avatar, The Quest for Eywa.

Cameron later confirmed that these are potential titles. Since the first one was true, it is possible these will also be the titles for the next three movies.

Avatar 2: Who’s back on Avatar The Way of Water

Cameron’s stars will return to the show when it hits. Zoe Saldana will play the Na’vi princess Neytiri again, while Sam Worthington will return as Jake Sully, the human-turned Na’vi.

Stephen Lang will be back as Colonel Miles Quaritch and he’ll be the main antagonist of the four movies. According to him, he will be able “really go into town and examine the character thoroughly” in the sequel (via the National).

James Cameron explained “I’m not going to say exactly HOW we’re getting him back. But it’s science fiction, after all.”

Although he isn’t giving away any details about his surprise return, he has said that the sequel will be worth the wait. “I believe [fans] will be enchanted-enchanted. He said , “There are people who will just adore the world.”

The teaser shows that there is a fan theory stating that Quaritch, one of the Na’vi characters, could have had his DNA or mind uploaded to an avatar. This would be similar to Jake’s experience in the first movie.

Sigourney Weaver, the sci-fi goddess, will be back as a completely new character, saying “Having read all four [the Avatar] scripts, I believe they’re absolutely exceptional and well worth the wait.”

Kate Winslet will play the role of Ronal throughout all Avatar sequels. This marks James Cameron and Kate Winslet’s first collaboration since 1997’s blockbuster Titanic.

CCH Pounder will play Neytiri’s mother Mo’at again, while Matt Gerald returns as Corporal Lyle Wainfleet. Edie Falco ( Sopranos and Nurse Jackie ) plays the new character General Ardmore.

The sequel will introduce a new Na’vi clan, the Metkayina. It is headed by Fear the Walking Dead‘s Cliff Curtis and Tonowari. Winslet’s character Ronal is a Metkayina clan member, along with Duane Evans Jr.’s Rotxo and Bailey Bass’s Reya.

Jake and Neytiri also have Na’vi children in their sequel, which includes Jamie Flatters’s Neteyam and Britain Dalton’s Lo’ak, and Trinity Bliss’s Tuktirey. Jack Champion plays Miles Socorro, also known as Spider.

“Jake took Neytiri in, but Neytiri never saw him as someone who destroyed her home or killed her father,” Jon Landau, producer of Empire, said. All these dynamics are now in play.

Game of Thrones‘ Oona Chaplin will portray Varang, who is described as a “strong central character” that will be used in all four sequels.

Marvel’s Michelle Yeoh also joined the cast to play Dr Karina Mogue. We got our first glimpse at her on set in February 2021. She was also mentioned in the caption as being in Avatar 3. So expect her to be a major role in these movies.

Yeoh stated in April 2022 that she could not really speak about the sequel or her part, but was full of praise for Cameron.

“I was so impressed by the work [he] has done, the work he’s doing and the energy. He is a genius. She remarked, “I really enjoyed the experience. I can’t wait until I go back soon. I hope.”

Fast & Furious star Vin Diesel added another franchise to the resume. He’s joined the sequels alongside Jemaine Clement as Dr Ian Garvin, a marine biologist, which Cameron described as “one of my favorite characters”.

Initial confusion arose about the inclusion of Harry Potter‘s David Thewlis in the sequel. He’ll be appearing in Avatar III (and 4 and 5), but not the sequel.

Avatar 2 plot – What will Avatar The Way of Water look like?

We received the title announcement and the first official synopsis of the sequel. However, it did not reveal any information that we already knew:

“Jake Sully resides on Pandora with his newly formed family. It states that Jake must team up with Neytiri, the army of Na’vi to defend their planet from a new threat.”

Sully was created around 14 years after the events in Avatar. She is now chieftain of their clan and Neytiri high-priestess of Neytiri – though events will focus on their children.

Jon Landau, producer, explained that Avatar 2 is a story about Jim [Cameron] who tells stories in universal themes. These universal themes are larger than any particular genre.

“Family is the most universal theme, and this is what you should be thinking about. The Sully family is at the heart of all our sequels. How do parents protect their families?”

We also know that there will be three sequels to this movie. Landau stated that each movie is a standalone story.

The return of Pandora’s RDA mining operation will also be included in the mix, forcing Jake and his family to travel to the “perceived safe harbor” at the reef to meet the Metkayina.

We are told they will also travel beyond Pandora’s forests into underwater and volcanic environments. Cameron promises that this will allow to “shit yourself with all your mouth open”. We think that’s a good thing.

Avatar 2 captured its motion capture scenes underwater to really convey the importance of water.

We also know that a sign language was created specifically for the movie by CJ, a deaf actor hired to create a “new Na’vi sign language”.

Cameron promised that the movies’ look will be so sophisticated that “you just won’t be able” to envision what it would look like. The look should be enough to bring back fans to the cinema to see the sequel.

“Big, costly films need to make a lot. Post-COVID, we’re in a new era of streaming. Perhaps those [box office] numbers won’t be seen again. We may never see those [box office] numbers again. It’s all just a big roll on the dice,” Cameron admitted.

He hyped up the movie’s big-screen experience at CinemaCon. Cameron teased that “[We] are pushing boundaries even further with high frame rates, higher resolution 3D, and greater reality in visual effects.”

“I wanted Pandora’s return to be something truly special. Each shot was designed to be viewed on the largest screen possible, with the highest resolution and best 3D. It was a great job, I believe.”
