Netflix has cancelled Designated Survivor season 4. The cancellation is a disappointing development for Designated Survivor, even though it was well-received both by critics and viewers. The political drama premiered on September 21st, 2016 and concluded its third season on June 7, 2019. ABC broadcast the first two seasons, and Netflix aired the third. David Guggenheim directed the riveting story of this American political thriller. Fans have been calling to see Designated Survivor revived since Netflix canceled Season 4 a little over a decade ago.

Everyone enjoyed the rollercoaster ride of the previous season, which ended with many mysteries. The answer is still unknown. Before we begin, we’ll remind you a bit about the previous season.
Designated Survivor Season 3 Recap and Ending explained

Ironically, Season 3 Designated Survivor ends uncharacteristically strong after it started so weak. Kirkman was forced to find a way to balance his right and his strategic priorities after the election. Nothing is more important than the decision about whether to release evidence exonerating Moss, Geoff Pierson, and incriminating his campaigns. Kirkman decides not to speak out for the sake and good of the country.
As I mentioned, this show has been on an extremely strange journey. Previous review. This series had to deal with the 2016 real-life elections that have dramatically altered the political landscape. Its first two seasons Designated Survivor believed in old-fashioned optimism when faced with adversity. Netflix’s Season 3 replaces optimism with cynicism. Cynicism replaces the season’s positive moments. Many characters feel more at home on the show. House of Cards than Designated Survivor. This season’s final two episodes are especially depressing.
DesignatedSurvivor was premised to show a world that is remarkably different from ours. An unexperienced Independent assumed the Presidency and dealt domestically and internationally with the ramifications. Even though the show was set in an alternate reality, it still had to be based on real-life issues to create episode plots that were relatable and entertaining. Designated Survivor focused on less polarizing topics to not alienate a large audience. Although it was about the President, it was not a politically-oriented show. However, some critics might have called this toothless. Netflix, however, decided to move the series further to the left, despite Kirkman running for the title of a “centrist”, likely focusing on Millennials. Although I know many viewers found Season 3’s use of Moss as a Trump surrogate, and his defeat to be cathartic for them, I feel that so closely aligning the show’s reality with ours is a deception. DesignatedSurvivor may have been released at the wrong time, but this was expected. How is it possible for a show like this to survive and still be relevant?

Despite the relief Moss’ defeat may bring to some fans, it is clear that Kirkman lies to the country. A lie he believes to be noble at the time. It is compelling, although I am not sure what it means for the overall message. Kirkman admitting to his lies in therapy is a smart reference to last season. Despite all the drama and turmoil this series has experienced, Kiefer’s performance has been its anchor. Although I miss Tom Kirkman, the best part of the season is his culmination.
This concludes the messy, but exciting season of Survivor. The whole season would have been difficult if I gave it a rating. As disappointed as I am with last season’s Emily cliffhanger handling, I have no problem with the plotlines of the side characters and, as jarring though it has been, this season had heart from the beginning. Despite the fact that the bio-terror storyline had the FBI wrongly doing their job and the threat itself bordering on science fiction, Hannah Wells (Maggie Q’s) death is still shocking. The show did not reveal that she had survived the finale. I appreciate it. It’s difficult to predict what the next season will bring. But President Kirkman will never again be the same.

Review before you watch Designated Survivor Season 4

What if 24, Jack Bauer was elected President of the United States…by accident? That was the terrifically bonkers starting point for Kiefer Sutherland’s latest small screen thriller when it kicked off in 2016, shortly before Donald Trump’s real life, stranger-than-fiction sweep to the White House.
Last year, President Tom Kirkman (Sutherland), faced an even greater challenge than the terrorist attack that saw the former housing secretary be hurriedly sworn into office as Commander-in Chief. The series was cancelled by ABC. Six months later, Netflix announced that it would renew Designated Survivor for a third series.
Designated Survivor uses Netflix’s monopoly over American television networks to the fullest extent possible. You can tell a slower story with more complexity, or you can make the air mildly blueish using f-bombs. Sutherland can channel his inner Frank Underwood and explore the darker side of the once-stoic Kirkman.
After having to deal with the death of his wife, Natascha (season two), Kirkman now looks forward to the election. He hopes to be the third-party candidate for the White House. He was an unaffiliated coopted into government after the terrorist attack on cabinet. Geoff Pierson (a triangulating Republican) is against him. He is sneering, and threatening, to challenge him. He must keep his staff away from engaging in a tumultuous drama. He must also deal with a strange subplot in bioterrorism which appears to have been lifted directly from Stephen King’s The Stand.

This last introduces Hannah Wells (Maggie Q). This is quite absurd, but it’s not always in a funny way. Frank Underwood (a late-stage House of Cards Member) would have to keep Congress in line while he dealt with the zombie apocalypse. How much more could that be? It’s a lot more.
Neal Baer clearly references Kevin Spacey’s “poisonous PotUS” as his reference point. He does not attempt to make Kirkman monologue before grabbing a dog’s throat. He does offer him a back-stabbing campaign director (Julie White), as well as an Anthony Edwards chief-of-staff (Take-no Prisoners Chief-of-staff), along with a dark secret.
Designated Survivor now airs 10 episodes rather than the 22 that were previously shown. Kirkman’s departure is the most noteworthy. Kirkman is not a boy Scout who reads a teleprompter. Kirkman’s desire to win reelection drives his moral compass into a tailspin.

This episode also includes a nod towards the West Wing. Kirkman’s idealistic staff, which includes Italia Ricci, a senior advisor and Kal Penn (White House Press Secretary), tries to reconcile their differences with the compromises required for winning an election. This show features real-life interviews of voters complaining about American politics’ divisions. This is a minor distraction from the otherwise entertaining hokeyness.
The cast clearly loves the scenery and has a lot of fun. It’s a fast-paced show with long-running characters dying unexpectedly, secret drug addictions, infidelity plots, and shocking deaths. As political drama Designated Survivor season three has the smoke-streaming-from-its-ears quality of a Donald Trump stump-speech. As a bursting-at-the-seams pot-boiler it is magnificent.
