Judge Steve Harvey is exactly who you think it to be. As the closing credits require, Harvey, who is not a lawyer nor a judge, presides over small-claims cases in which the parties have permitted him to act as an arbiter. He mentions that he doesn’t have a law degree but is able to use common sense. He needs a lot of common sense, and boy does he need it.

Opening shot: “All rise to the honorable Judge Steve Haaaarrvey!” An announcer shouts, “All rise for the honorable Judge Steve Haaaarvey!” He stands in the shadows of a spotlight with his hands at his midsection, while the doors behind him open up.

The Gist: Harvey presides over three cases. The first case involves neighbors and ex-friends Mui and Melanie who are in dispute over a damaged fence. Mui sues Melanie for the fence she claims Melanie damaged in 2017. She also sues Melanie for half the cost of a St. Patrick’s Day party Melanie suggested they throw to “mend fences.” Harvey spends the majority of the segment trying to understand why he’s deciding to adjudicate a fence that was damaged more than four years ago.

The second case involves Daphni suing her sister Tiffani over $6,000 she paid Tiffani to cover funeral expenses for her brother. Daphni claims Tiffani used the funeral money to buy a BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift) and that she cheaped out. Erin sued her little brother Drake in the third case. He was paid $5,000 to build custom cabinets. Nothing has been built. Drake claims that he is trying to find the right wood and is not subject to COVID supply shortages. Harvey is stunned at the deal Erin is receiving. Erin is told by Jesus that Jesus was a carpenter and that he would charge more.

Our take: After five minutes of Judge Steve Harvey, the absurd idea that Harvey was deciding small-claims disputes among people is dispelled. This is when you see the true purpose of the show. It’s a court program, sorta. It’s actually a court show. This mindset makes the show a fun diversion but one you won’t want to miss.

Let’s face facts: These cases are quite silly. The producers saw “BBL” in the docket while scouting cases and thought it was hilarious. One sibling is suing the other in two cases. One case involves siblings who don’t get along well with each other and the other one shows them being close. These cases are all pretty common sense. However, Harvey’s best skill is to read the situation and then react.

Harvey can be quite funny in certain situations, such as when he tells both sides exaggeratedly that they don’t understand each other or when he stands up to tell Tiffani that Tiffani charged her BBL on her credit card so she could have used her sister’s money for the bill. The comedian show is funny, and even the defendants and plaintiffs are aware of it. They all have a good time laughing with Harvey when he shuts them down.

Harvey has so far managed to laugh at the arguments without making fun of them. It’s going to be difficult to maintain that balance, but Harvey has been around a while so he should be able.
