Review Before To Watch Northern Rescue Season 2

Northern Rescue, a melodramatic family drama, attempts to mimic the tone of serious shows like This Is Us. However, it is closer to realistic soap operas like Station 19 than it should be. This is a shame, as there are some great ideas and the modern parenting angle is definitely a plus. Northern Rescue isn’t able to stand out amongst the many choices in this saturated field.
After a lengthy and informative introduction by Maddie, the West family is fully introduced to us. The seemingly perfect family is thrown into chaos when Sarah, their mother, dies. John must then raise their three children, Scout, Maddie, and Taylor. The family moves to a small community at the end of the first episode. This is where the majority of the story takes place.
While each child deals with their own problems, the dark secrets of their pasts threaten to surface as the kids try to adjust to their new life away from Boston. Scout struggles to adjust to his new life without his girlfriend while Maddie deals with her anger issues, the secret she has, and Taylor feels the pressure to attend a new school.

These subplots are being played out while Search and Rescue Commander John deals with his own concerns regarding raising his children and participating in an episode of a new operation. This builds to several dramatic interludes that keep things interesting, including the final episode, which is filled with emotional moments.
The story is actually quite serviceable. It can be very entertaining, especially at the end when things get very dramatic. The series’ acting and tone are often poor. Northern Rescue is unable to decide which story it wants. It pulls between three subplots about the main children while keeping the focus on John, the struggling father.

Northern Rescue could be Netflix’s biggest family drama. It fails to achieve the same lofty heights as Modern Family and This Is Us, but it is closer to a boring cable series. It’s full of boring expository dialogue and distracting stock music. It’s a shame, as many of the themes, particularly the complex relationships between the children and their father, are beautifully implemented, but drowned out with unnecessary tonal choices.
Northern Rescue is definitely not a bad show. It’s not a great show. It’s an average, middling family drama that has some good ideas but is mediocre. It can be predictable at times, and with the melodrama and questionable acting, Northern Rescue is unable to escape its own problems.
