It was a wonderful anime when Tokyo Ravens debuted its first season. The first season of the show was amazing. Fans eagerly awaited Season 2, after seeing how incredible the first season of Tokyo Ravens.
Especially considering the nine-year wait. Season 2 has yet to be released. Many viewers abandoned the idea of Tokyo Ravens Season 2

The final episode of the anime begins with a flashback about Kon and Yakou’s first encounter. Natsume can be seen resting in a large hall at the end. Harutora visits them. After a peaceful revelation, Harutora and two of his friends walk into the setting light at the road.
Many people view the ending as romantic, but also bittersweet or melancholy. Many forum members and viewers know that Harutora left Natsume to find a way to bring her back, after she was fully restored to Yakou.
She could help him resolve any ceremony that he had in his youth that led to thecatastrophic disaster at the beginning. This is yet another reason to leave her. The idea of the writer was to simply tell Kon’s story in the previous episode. This episode offers plenty of room for thought and opens up the possibility for a second season.
Tokyo Ravens Season 2 Release date
Although Tokyo Ravens Season 1 was very popular, it is not enough to warrant a second season. There is enough material in the light novel to last 12 seasons. The new season can be seen in 2024 if there is a renewal. A second season is unlikely, so renewal is required first. It is likely that there will be a renewal in 2024.
Tokyo Ravens Season 2 Characters
We might be able to see new characters in Season 2. The main characters will still be the same. Let’s discover who they are.
Harutora Tsuchimikado – Harutora Tsuchimikado, the main protagonist in the first half of the story and the son of a Tsuchimikado family. He is not a wizard, even though he was born to a noble Onmyouji family. He seems to be happy because he cannot achieve anything without supernatural powers.
Touji Ato: Touji Ato was Harutora’s best friend at school. He is able to sense spirits and has an extensive knowledge of onmyodo. He discovered that Natsume had cast Hokuto before Hokuto. Harutora is also a member of Onmyo Academy Tokyo and he helps Harutora get out of trouble.
Natsume: Natsume, the main protagonist in the second half. She is Harutora’s childhood friend and the daughter of the Tsuchimikado main family. She is a wealthy onmyouji and is currently visiting a school here in Tokyo. She is also an heir of the Tsuchimikado clan. She is considered Yakou Tsuchimikado’s incarnation.
Suzuka Dairenji – Suzuka Dairenji, also known as the Prodigy, is the youngest of all the Twelve Divine Generals. For studying and using a prohibited spell, she is wanted as a criminal. Suzuka arrives in the village to find Natsume. She wants her magical abilities to use in the Taizan Fukun Ritual which Natsume has been learning, along with Yakou Takimikado. Suzuka is then drawn into conflict with the Onmyo Agency.
Tokyo Ravens Season 2 Plotline
Tsuchimikado Hrutora is from an Onmyoji family but cannot see the “spirit energy.” He has been peacefully living with his friends at an Onmyo branch school. Tsuchimikado Nasume, his boyhood friend’s heir to a head family, appears one day. This will have an impact on his life in the future.

Story Premise
The story centers around a Japanese teenager called Harutora Tsuchimikado who, along with his friends, attends a prestigious academy for magic practitioners called Onmyojins. They practice a form Japanese magic that has been woven together over time called Imperial Style Onmyodo. There is another faction, Yakou Tsuchimikado. This group seeks to revive the pioneer of this magic practice. He must learn to be both her familiar, and a fellow magician in order to protect her.
It’s definitely shounen so there is a lot of formula to it. The show features a main character who is unable to grasp the fact that a girl is lusting after him, badass teachers and a best bro, who makes the story more interesting than the main character. There are also some filler and ecchi that make the story less compelling, as well as an antagonist who borders on insane.
Things get really exciting after Episode 14. The series’ strongest villain, Doumanashiya, faces off against Harutora’s teacher Jin Ohtomo in an epic magic duel. It’s akin to the battle between Voldemort or Dumbledore in Harry Potter. Strategies are built upon each other until one is determined. The raw magical power of the magician is countered by tactics and exploiting weaknesses, until the final act where Harutora and the crowd are completely amazed.
From that battle onwards the enemy becomes clearer, gaining depth beyond cultists and psychopaths and monsters-of-the-week. It becomes a political issue about the limitations of magical practices and how the efforts to expand them lead to so much suffering and pain, which ultimately leads to the death or the resignation of an important character. The status quo was completely altered by the end of anime.
This is the kind of ending that makes you want to explore the new change. But it ends because the anime comes from a light-novel manga that’s still in the ongoing. They haven’t released a sequel. This is frustrating beyond words, but we are able to live with it.
Setting
The story is set in Japan after an alternate WWII. Japanese forces recruited Yakou Tsuchimikado’s help to weaponize onmyodo and create things like armored shikigami that could act as living tanks. They also mixed other Asian magic systems together to create what would become known as Imperial Style magic. Japan lost their chance at victory due to a failed ritual. It was then plagued by spiritual disasters that can create spirits, demons, and other evil forces that can cause havoc if not purified. Onmyodo is now simplified greatly. Those who are able to see and use spiritual energy can become onmyojin and help with spiritual disasters.
We have a world where many aspects and practices of Japanese magic are central to the plot. You see shikigami used to find and subdue opponents, kotodama used to scatter foes and dragon spirits that can exorcise wicked, oni that possess people and give them extraordinary strength, and extensive use of Ofuda magic talismans. They have even been involved in the use of the cycle for creation and destruction in combat. This has led to tactical battles between experts from their respective fields.
Characters
For the most part, the characters in the story are as you would expect from a Shounen anime. They aren’t boring, but they do have interesting backstories that can be added to the story. They are especially popular with those who cheat death and have the ability to become immortals or reincarnated. Unfortunately, many of the female characters become enamored of our protagonist and this is a problem.
Harutora Tsuchimikado: Our main protagonist. He is a country boy, his father is a magician and he was born without the ability to see magic or spirits. When a call arrives at his door, he kicks in his teeth and his childhood friend is apparently killed to protect him. He becomes Natusme’s shikigami, and tries his best to protect her. Although he isn’t anything extraordinary, he soon becomes addicted to magic and has ambitions of his own.
Kon – Harutora’s shikigami is a fox-girl with a small body who carries a smaller sword. She’s loyal to him, but behaves like a child at times, which leads to some less than pleasant exposure scenes. She was not a character I liked until the second half of the season, when the secrets were revealed and maturity was restored.
NatsumeTsuchimikado is Harutora’s cousin. He is also known as the heir of the main branch. She dresses up as a boy and goes out in public. Because magic is not able to see through, she tries to keep Harutora on track while dealing with kidnappers at various points in the series. It is obvious that she has a crush on Harutora. But, without wanting to spoil too much.
Touji: Harutora’s best bro, and far more interesting than him at the beginning. After a series of spiritual disasters, he was made a living spirit by the oni. He can summon immense strength even if he is possessed. We see that he had a terrible past and that he and Harutora bonded first beating Harutora to death. Then Harutora returned the favor. He is his second-in command and watches his back.
Tenma Mooe is a classmate of Harutora and a somewhat reclusive individual. His family were behind the creation of the shikigami shown in the story, but he’s not very notable. He has low self-esteem and is barely noticeable compared to his friends. He learns how to use this weapon and is able to be more effective in combat later in the series.
Kyouko Curahashi: A classmate of Harutora and the granddaughter to the Onmyodo Academy head, Kyouko is initially a very unappealing character. She has a crush upon Natsume because she believes she is a boy. This explains why she becomes bitter when Harutora enters the picture. Although she eventually gets over it and is helpful, it does damage her character.
Suzuka Dairenji is a member of the Divine Generals, and the first antagonist in the series. She tries to use Natsume as a way to resurrect her brother who has died. She is saved and sealed. Her powers are restrained, and she joins Harutora’s class. While developing a crush on him, it goes horribly. Although she is haughty and acts more like a seductress to the girls than her peers, it is clear that she has some problems. She was not a good choice for me.
Jin Ohtomo is Harutora’s teacher. He is also, if it’s not obvious, my favorite character from the series. He is a former member of the Divine Genes, who are some of the most skilled magic-users in the area. At first, he seems relaxed and laid back, until the moment when he must prove that he has earned the rank by showing not only his magical prowess but also cunning, foresight and ingenuity. He clearly has a long and rich history, which is evident in the wealth of experience he has gained.
Douman Ashiya is an ancient magic-user, who acts as a wild card and is the most powerful character in this series. He has lived a long and fulfilling life. This is why he can work for both sides at once. Because he impressed Jin during Episode 14, he has a fascination for Jin. This plays into his later characters.
Reijikagami: Reiji, the resident jerk, and badass member of the Divine Generals, is an antagonist for some parts of the story including the climax and gives solid advice about their abilities. He does basically what he likes, when he likes, and must be brought to justice.
Animation & Sound
The story’s slow sections are dominated by standard art. It is not too offensive, but it isn’t really striking. There is a noticeable change in the quality of special effects and magic when the action begins.
However, it does suffer from poor CGI when it comes to man-made shikigami. For example, when the school was infested by a group of spider-tanks. They may have meant to be unnatural or artificial, as compared to natural shikigami. However, I could live without it.
Maybe it’s because I don’t really like sound-tracks but there was nothing that stood out to me. Although I do like the theme associated with a battle or crisis, it’s not my favorite.
The Final Words
The show’s first episode drags it down until episode 14, when things pick up and the plot progresses in spades. Although the anime’s premise isn’t unique, it has a more grounded and reasonable feel than Mahouka. It’s unfortunate that the anime ended where it did. However, it’s worth a look if you have a slow time and still want to see more of this type of anime.
