Blade Of The Immortal Bakumatsu Arc spoilers (summary/synopsis).

Manji was in Bakumatsu during the 19th Century. He is now over 100 years old, and has stopped counting birthdays. Since the last time we saw him, he has been to America, where he learned English but was mistakenly identified as Native American.
Manji, despite killing more than 1000 evil men on Yaobikuni’s advice 30 years ago, is still very immortal. Manji lived 14 years in Japan’s Tosa Domain. He was teaching English at Niijima Shometa’s school by 1864.
Living as such, Manji met Ryoma Sakamoto (a 28-year-old samurai).

Manji’s “tall tales” are a favorite of the young man. He believes, unlike many others, that Manji will live forever. Ryoma wants to know more about Manji’s life, including his romantic history. Manji refuses or is vague.
Ryoma suggests Manji seek redemption by helping other people, as killing villains doesn’t bring Manji redemption or end his curse of immortality. Despite their differences on Japan’s future, Manji recalls Rin’s assistance and sets out to find that.
Manji is Ryoma’s Tosa Imperialist friend and loyal to both the Emperor of Japan and the Tokugawa Shogunate. Manji agrees with him to go to Kyoto. There were conflicts between Shinsengumi and the Imperialists. This special police force was established by the Bakufu military government during the Bakumatsu period.
Kondo Isami, Okita Shoji, and Okita Saoji are both members of Historical Shinsengumi.

Manji soon finds himself in trouble with the Shinsengumi of Kyoto. He’s quickly cut down. Ryoma is happy when Manji overcomes a mortal wound to defeat the foes.
As a result, one faction considered burning Kyoto to pieces. Manji is not interested in being associated with such extreme actions.
Ayame Buran is a Japanese woman who knows of the horrific experiments on Manji performed 80 years ago under Edo Castle.
Ayame, who is a descendant of one of the characters in the original season, was Dr. Ayame Bulando’s great-granddaughter. She knows Manji’s identity well and would like to meet him for special reasons.

REVIEW BEFORE YOU VIEW Blade of the Immortal Season 2.

Following the lead of titles like Samurai Champloo and Blade of the Phantom Master, this is the first volume of Blade of the Immortal. It feels like a two-hour case of style over substance. While the fights and animation are excellent, the plot is a simple revenge plot. The main character is simply replaced for his murder reasons. Another problem is that Manji’s immortal bloodworms are not explained. Given the 13 episodes, it is hard to believe that everything will be resolved satisfactorily.
The series takes place in 1780s Japan. It begins with Manji, the series’ first introduction. After being betrayed by his master, this solo samurai has been known as the “Hundred Man Killer”. Many of these murders can also be attributed to Manji’s cursed bloodworms that give him immortality. Manji considers this a curse, and tries to find solace in caring for a young lady whose husband was once his victim. Manji takes revenge for his mistakes and kills a thousand criminals. Rin, a young girl seeking revenge on the Itto-ryu group that abused her and killed her parents. Manji listens to Rin’s story, and agrees to assist her in her quest for revenge. They tell mostly their own stories as the pair meets members of the Itto-ryu.
This animation was only created two years ago. Blade of the Immortal is extremely solid. This presentation is 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen. Bee Train and Production I.G have done an excellent job in bringing this manga to life. Some scenes are a little too soft, while the darker scenes aren’t as strong. Overall, the film is very good. Blade of the Immortal is a great series to take a look at.
The audio is however mixed. Both the Japanese and English tracks sound clear, with both soft tones and loud sword clashes which blend well. Strangely, however, Bang Zoom! Entertainment, the series’ creator, recorded the English track in stereo, which is a problem for the audio quality. The series’ opening and closing themes, ‘Akai Usagi’ and ‘Wants’, fit strangely well. Voice acting is excellent in their roles. While it is an audio masterpiece, it will not blow you away.
All extras are kept to a minimum for each release. The opening and closing themes, along with trailers for anime-samurai-related releases, are all textless. It’s not great, but the US release was quite average in this area so there’s nothing to be unhappy about.
Blade of the Immortal. This series uses style very cleverly to keep you coming back for more. Each episode is very straightforward, but there’s a bigger story behind it all that should be explored in the next installment. The fights are predictable but you still want to learn how the plot works. You can also learn the story about Manji’s bloodworms in just five episodes. While it is difficult to see the series answer all these questions and fleshing out its plot with eight episodes left to go, that alone is a reason to continue to watch.
