Welcome to Wedding Hell Season 1 Review

Welcome To Wedding Hell This is the latest KakaoTV K-drama offering. It has a low episode number (12), with each episode clocking in at the 37-minute mark. This should make it ideal for a quick binge-watch.
However, theory is not always practical and Welcome To Wedding Hell is often unremarkable and sometimes even formulaic to the point that it frustrates.
The premise of the story is simple: Can Na-eun (Lee Yeonhee) and Junhyeong, the leading couple, keep their fragile relationship intact as they face the challenges and tribulations that come with their wedding preparations?

This drama presents these two young lovebirds, who almost get terribly wrong. It’s great fun. Welcome To Wedding Hell is at first a joke. But if you are a little worried about how these two adults have survived the world, you can still root for them.
Episode after episode, there is a loss of playfulness in the episodes. This is because a formula that sees a lot of arguments end with superficial, one-sided apologies is relentlessly applied. This can lead to viewers losing sight of the reason why the couple should remain together after such toxic episodes if there is not a strong enough anchor for their romance.
The drama attempts to break the pattern and bring us to the top of a pivotal relationship turning point. However, the drama’s lack of nuance and care tends to undermine its efforts. Jun-hyeong and Na-eun experience very little character growth and their relationship dynamics never reaches a satisfying conclusion. They are endearing when things are going well and are open to discussing any communication issues.

The couple’s friends and parents make up the secondary cast. These characters are so flat that they can be cut out of life-size pieces. They have virtually no chance to live outside of helping Jun-hyeong and Na-eun. The budding relationship between their friends Hui–seon, Min-woo and their mother is a highlight. They are both very outspoken in their individual ways but have a lot of laughs when they get together.
However, Kim Mi-kyung’s role as Na-eun’s mother is criminally underused. She’s a veteran of K-drama, but she gets very little screen time and has a non-existent character story. Despite this, she is a great actress and her relationship to Jun-hyeong’s mother manages both to be funny and sincere.
This is the type of production I would expect to see in a YouTube web drama. This drama could have been better served by a shorter 10-12 minute episode and more mature writing. Welcome To Wedding Hell is the place to go if you want low-stakes fluff.
