Shinichi Fukuda’s manga series of romance and comedy My Dress-up Darling has been a hit with viewers this year. Studio CloverWorks adapted the manga series so well that it actually caused the creator of the manga to become emotional when she wept with joy.

Due to the popularity of the anime series and the increase in sales of manga books, Comic Natalie recently published an interview with Shinichi Fukuda. She was asked what inspired her to come to the idea of mixing a love story for teenagers with two other interests: Hina dolls and cosplay:

If I had been talking to a cosplayer prior to, I learned that her husband or boyfriend had once said, “I want you to end your cosplaying. If you don’t, I’ll end your relationship with you.” I’ve heard lots of people want to keep enjoying what they love and then give up, and I was astonished. When I was drawing the manga, I wanted to make sure that when people who cosplay or who enjoy reading this manga, Wakana as well as Marin would inspire them to continue their passions.

When asked what she thought when she learned that My Dress-up Darling would be getting an adaptation for anime, she replied:

I was thinking I was sure that it could never be my experience. I was skeptical about it in any way. I was thinking that if they were to create an animated series, I would be crying more and be happier, however, I didn’t think of it that way, so when they told me that they were going to do it, I didn’t have any choice to change it.

In her interview with the magazine, she stated that she’d seen the first two episodes of the anime and it was so enjoyable that she was crying with joy. Shinichi was able to watch the same episodes again and repeatedly for 13 long hours. “I believe I’ve never had a better time in my career as a manga creator. It was an amazing feeling to watch my manga evolve and gain the voice of a person,” she wrote.

My Dress-up Darling manga series is drawn and written by Shinichi Fukuda. He published the manga in January 2018 within Square Enix’s Young Gangan magazine. Studio CloverWorks picked up the manga to adapt it into an anime. The initial season of the show included 12 episodes.

Fukuda wasn’t the only one who was happy with the anime adaptation of their manga. Despite competing against popular returning series such as Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer, My Dress-Up Darling has managed to be among the most talked about series of this season. It has also received favorable reviews across all genres.

The show’s popularity has started to reach its manga counterpart and 1.5 million comics were ordered since the series premiered to anticipate demand for sales which has brought the manga’s total circulation at 5 million printed. Due to My Dress-Up Darling‘s huge popularity, it’s not surprising that Fukuda said it was the most joyful moment in their professional career.
