In March, the official website released an hour-long “Wonder Egg Priority Special Edition” episode which will conclude the show and reveal its “true” ending. It debuted on Tuesday, June 29, at 9pm on Japanese TV and will soon be released on a number of streaming platforms including Funimation.

What has happened?

What has happened?

The first half hour of the special provides an overview of the happenings that occurred in episodes 1-12. The recap outlines the adventures that the girls went through collecting eggs, as well as Acca and Ura-Acca’s story. The final part of the recap reveals what we witnessed in episode 12 as Ai defends her alternate self in her fantasy and takes on her final fight. After being defeated by Frill’s beast Kirara, Ai’s alternate self gives up her blue eyes so that Ai is able to complete the task.

At this point, Momo Sawaki and Rika Kawai stopped collecting eggs since they’ve all accomplished their goals. Ai was capable of bringing her friend Koito back, however Koito does not seem to remember her in any way.

Ai discovers that Rika’s most popular fan, Chiemi, also has no memory of her but is now a follower of a different idol called Makorin. Momo Sawaki’s friend Haruka, who was initially attracted to her, has lost those memories also and is now engaged to a male upperclassman.

What caused Ai, Rika, and Momo’s other friends all to forget their names? The reason is that collecting eggs doesn’t make them come back and makes a new alternate model, one that never dies. The real versions of their friends are still in the dreams of their friends like Ai’s alternate self, who took her own life.

What was the fate of Neiru?

What was the fate of Neiru?

Neiru has also accomplished her mission, and twin sister Airu is returned to life, who Ai initially believes is Neiru. Kotobuki Awano also comes back without any memories of her death. But, unlike the other heroines, Neiru was not able to return to her dreamworld. We learn why as Kotobuki gives the women a clip of her dream from the past.

We’ve learned from Wonder Egg Priority that Neiru Aonuma was made in a lab. Through the entire series, Neiru is worried about being like a “human” like the people who surround her. In her last dream, Frill is seen and takes advantage of this and bribes Neiru to stay within the realm of dreams in order to learn to act human like her. Neiru is currently within the dream world.

After learning the fact that her best friend has an AI, Rika refuses to take on the risk of her life for the sake of it. Ai is also hesitant to take action at first; instead, she moves into a new school, but slowly becomes separated from her fellow wonder egg acquaintances.

One day, Ai makes an impulsive choice and rushes towards Acca and Ura-Acca to get more eggs. Despite the uncertainty of her chances, she is determined to fight to save Neiru. The episode concludes with Ai making a decision to fight.

What questions remain unanswered?

What questions remain unanswered?

There are a lot of questions not answered by the end of Wonder Egg Priority. The most important of these is what was the fate of Koito?

We have Mr. Sawaki’s explanation of the events that occurred: Koito was in love with a professor who took her own life. Following the suicide, she was seen at the top of her school’s roof, saying that she was going to leap. The teacher Mr. Sawaki tried to save her, but she continued screaming that he had raped her before she killed herself.

It’s not clear if the story is real or not; as we’ve seen in the show, the actor it appears that Mr. Sawaki does not seem to be a person who would assault his student, however Koito isn’t the kind of girl to tell lies about something like this. At the conclusion, it’s clear that we don’t find out if Mr. Sawaki is partially responsible for Koito’s death.

Another unanswered question is what is Frill’s connection to teenage suicides of girls? How can she cause these girls to commit suicide?

The theory is that she researched her creators while they were still trusting her, and used the research for her own advantage. Frill probably wants to be noticed by Acca and Ura-Acca who left her, hindering their work. In a daughterly-yandere-way, she wants to be the only person significant to them and must get rid of everyone else in her way. This may be because of having an unorthodox childhood and the possibility of making mistakes in her design.

The special 1-hour conclusion of Wonder Egg Priority answers some of our concerns, but it leaves a lot of mysteries to be solved. Since it’s an original piece, it is possible to find the answers to these questions through a sequel or another special episode. There’s no information concerning a continuation yet, but keep an eye out for updates!

Wonder Egg Priority Special Ending Explained: Frill, the Accas, Ai’s Future, and Final Thoughts

Wonder Egg Priority Special Ending Explained Frill, the Accas, Ai's Future, and Final Thoughts

The show concludes with Ai, who is now a student at a different school and having fallen out of touch with all those who were part of the magical egg-filled season in her life. But, she’s saved the images of herself as well as Neiru, Rika and Momoe and believes that nothing can cause her to feel the same.Advertisement

In a quick decision, she goes to Acca and Ura-Acca, asking whether she is still able to buy eggs. The Accas agree, but inform her that they might not be able to locate Neiru. However, Ai is willing to give it a shot.

What does this all suggest? It could be that Ai was true to her word to be a hero of Eros and the pursuit of love, life and fulfillment – in contrast to Thanatos, the drive to death. For me personally, I would have wanted a bittersweet end with Ai being able to move on, although she was unable to live through that turbulent time in her life. But, her desire to fight may mean she has put aside the idea of dying for good and is eager to assist others in doing the same.

Wonder Egg Priority Special Ending Explained Frill, the Accas, Ai's Future, and Final Thoughts

However, at this point I’d like to mention that many things aren’t resolved; Frill was portrayed as a threatening villain and the show did not seem to have the space to adequately deal with her. As awful as she is, she’s also a kid who didn’t understand and the Accas were villains who treated her in a horrible way. Will Ai be able to comprehend this? Do they get away with it? And what does Frill have to relate to all these teens who commit suicide?

To say that she’s somehow influenced the thoughts of any teenager who has committed suicide – excluding her daughter, Himari, perhaps – is to minimize the complicated reasons that lead teens to commit suicide in the real world. How can the Accas return the girls to their former selves if they’re simply projections of a dream world?

In that way, we are left with the impression that it was much more than it could manage, which could have weakened the things it excels in – having tough discussions about taboo topics, and stressing the need for help and insisting on the importance of a warm friendship.
