A Fantastic Film that Finally Cracks the Secret of CGI Anime

Dragon Ball is one of the most loved franchises. Although the original manga was published from 1984 to 1995 and has been in print for over three decades, the franchise continues to be popular. Dragon Ball Super, the newest era of the series, is now available. Dragon Ball continues to win over fans old and new with both manga and anime versions of Dragon Ball Super. Toei Animation, Akira Toriyama, and Toei Animation, have been striving to make films that are worth seeing in theaters. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, one of the most striking films in the franchise, fits right in that goal.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly was the previous film and was a great example of 2D animation. The battles were amazing and it was always an enjoyable experience to see our favorite characters in their best-looking avatars. Toei used CGI to enhance certain scenes and moments in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Slowly, animation studios are moving to 3D animation. Although the transition has been slow, it is definitely a slower process than what 3D animation is today in the west.
Japan’s anime studios are not trying to create films the same way Disney or Pixar would. Instead, they tried to translate the anime aesthetic in a 3D setting. This was a challenging task that has seen some TV and movie shows fail spectacularly. CGI has resulted in stiff animations, awkward interactions and a lackluster 3D model. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero may be the first movie to break the CGI anime formula. It looks amazing.
Dragon Ball FighterZ, an Arc System Works fighting game, proved that 3D Dragon Ball can look great. It was able to look exactly like the most animated episodes of the series and maintain the epic feeling that has accompanied these episodes. Toei may have taken some lessons from this game, as they did the impossible. Super Hero’s CGI animation looks amazing and doesn’t feel stiff.
2D anime will always be the king, but Toei has created an incredible CGI anime film. CGI should be used in a more creative way by more studios. This movie has 3D camera work that is beyond what we have seen in the series. The movie also features some very intense and spectacular battle scenes towards the end. 3D animation is able to capture a lot of the heart and humor that we love about the series.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, aside from its amazing animation, is very special because it tells an uncommon story in which Vegeta or Goku are not in the middle of it. Although the Dragon Ball cast is large, stories centered almost exclusively on Vegeta and Goku as the series progressed. These two characters are the biggest in power, so whenever a new threat arises, you can rest assured that these two characters will take on the challenge.
This leaves the other characters behind as if they are just background noise. Dragon Ball Super Hero is open to this aspect of the story, and he takes it on. It is this time that other characters have the opportunity to play the role of the protagonists. The cast has more to offer in this one and it is an honor to be able to shine in the spotlight. We wish there were more stories like this. The cast deserves it.
Piccolo is the main character in the movie and he does it well. Piccolo is one of the most intriguing characters in the series and has the best character development. He was able to transform from being an enemy into a friend, but he was forgotten in the latter parts of Z and Super. He now proves that he is capable of carrying an entire film on his back, and we are able to laugh and cry with joy just for him.
Piccolo, Gohan and Piccolo share the spotlight in this film. This feels perfect, especially for those of you who know and appreciate the history and relationship between these characters. It is incredible to see them fighting each other. Gohan, who was portrayed in Dragon Ball Z early as a warrior with infinite potential, proves once more that he is one of the most formidable warriors in all of Dragon Ball Z.
The film’s mix of comedy and action is just perfect. It is wonderful to see the story move forward. And whatever comes next, it must be very exciting. It is clear that Toriyama, along with the other writers, are putting together a formidable team for the future. The movie ends with a great post-credit scene that pays off. Make sure you don’t leave the theater until you have seen it.
Dragon Ball Super Super Hero is a triumph. It is one of the greatest Dragon Ball films ever made. It feels original and the story centered around Piccolo and Gohan feels refreshing. Toei’s ability to master the CGI anime craft is a remarkable feat. As the technology improves, we can only imagine how it will look. If you’re a fan of the franchise, this is a must-watch.
