Itachi Killed His Clan is one of the most intriguing characters in Naruto lore. He is the prominent, powerful son of a noble clan and murders his entire family in a massacre which sets off many of the series’ main plots (at least for younger brother Sasuke). The series writers use this pivotal event to explore many compelling concepts. Itachi didn’t make the decision to kill his clan on his own. However, he ended up doing it to protect his village and his younger brother. Danzo promised to spare his life if Itachi went ahead with the plan.

Itachi’s clan

The Uchiha Clan, one of Konohagakure’s four aristocratic clans, is reputed to be the village’s most powerful due to their Sharingan and inherent fighting ability. The Uchiha had helped to create Konoha many decades ago. However, they became increasingly isolated from village affairs and eventually led to the Uchiha Clan downfall which saw most of the Uchiha go to their deaths. Only a handful of Uchiha survived to the present.
The Uchiha descend from Hagoromo Otsutsuki’s older brother, Indra Otsutsuki. The Uchiha were granted Hagoromo’s “eyes” by Indra, which gave them tremendous spiritual energy and chakra. Uchihas can experience intense emotions due to the “Curse of Hatred”, originally shown by Indra. These feelings usually begin as love for a family member or friend, and then become hatred when that person is no longer there.

The Sharingan of an Uchiha awakens after a loss, real or imagined. A large part of Uchiha’s fame and reputation can be attributed to the Sharingan. The Senju clan and the Uchiha have been at war for millennia. This rivalry dates back to Indra’s younger brother, Asura. Asura was chosen by the Sage of Six Paths to succeed him as his successor. Asura believed that Asura’s desire for peace through love was more important than Indra’s desire to have peace by might.
To reclaim his birthright, Indra fought Asura. He was motivated by the Curse of Hatred. The descendants of Indra, Asura, and the Uchiha and Senju fought on through the years, even though no one knew why.
What did Itachi do for his Clan?

Itachi was an Uchiha Anbu spy and discovered his clan’s plans for a coup. This would weaken the village and expose it to external dangers like other ambitious villages that might take the chance. Itachi was then told by Danzo that if he killed all his tribe, his brother would be safe and his kin would die.
Itachi is here that he established himself as one of the most insane and crazy characters in Naruto and anime. Let’s look at the Uchiha clan more closely to understand why Itachi was a murderous madman and a failure. The Uchihas were hated and feared by the community. They were pushed to outsiders, looked down upon, and their leader was treated as garbage like all the others.

Fugaku, the Uchiha leader, grows tired of the treatment his clan is getting by the town. He vows to stop it and ensure that the Uchihas don’t feel oppressed or looked down on in the future. To become Hokage, he plans a coup to overthrow the village leaders. What did Itachi do in order to stop the coup? With his plus one, he killed his entire tribe (women and men, children).
Itachi was just four years old when he saw the third global shinobi war. He was shaken by the thought of another war like the previous one and wanted to stop it.

Shisui Uchiha was to mind-control Fugaku, the leader of their clan. However, Danzo took one eye and Shisui didn’t want people to know. Shisui left a note stating that he had ruined his eyes and no one will pursue him. Danzo gave Itachi another assignment: to kill Uchiha, in return for Sasuke’s younger brother.
Why did Itachi kill the Uchiha Clan?
Because the Uchiha was unhappy with their treatment, they plotted a coup. Fugaku, who was the chief of the Uchiha as well as the primary conspirator for the coup, supported Itachi’s rise to the Anbu’s ranks and used it to spy on the village. Konohagakure was founded by the Uchiha family. They founded, together with Senju clan foes, the first Shinobi hamlet in the world during the feudal period of the Naruto universe.

Others followed their example, bringing the world from the small-scale conflict in the “Warring States” period into the global superpowers that were Naruto’s beginning. They were able to come to an agreement to stop the slaughter, but the bitterness that remained between these two great families was not completely forgotten.
It was a matter of great regret that the Uchiha clan was frequently overlooked when it came to distributing responsibilities in the village administration. Since the inception of the village, Senju family members held power and appointed their clansmen and friends.

The Uchiha refused help in the defense of the town against the huge beast and other clans and village dwellers became increasingly suspicious of them. Slowly, the clan was removed from Konoha’s political concerns and they retired to their village part, where tempers flared and clan chiefs stewed with their own fury. Fugaku Uchiha, the clan head, planned to shake up things by staging an attack on the village’s authorities. The village elders were informed and the clan’s youngest member, Fugaku Uchiha, was forced to make a decision: Kill his clan for Konoha or perish with them.
Itachi understood, however, that an Uchiha coup would lead to involvement from other villages and a new World War. This he couldn’t accept. He became a double agent and informed the Third Hokage as well as the Konoha Council of the Uchiha’s actions in the hope of facilitating peaceful settlement.

Itachi and Shisui shared the responsibility of betraying their clan. As time went by, however, it became clear that peace was not possible. Shisui had planned to use his Kotoamatsukami against the Uchiha commanders in order to make them compromise. But Danzo cut his right eye before that could happen.
Shisui gave his last eye to Itachi, and pleaded with him to protect the hamlet as well as their family name. He was forced to do so after he had exhausted all other options. Itachi was so devastated by the death of Shisui that he woke up to his Mangekyo Sharingan.

Itachi was accused of murdering Shisui by several Uchihas. He was also accused of faking suicide the next day. Itachi and his family had split up and Hiruzen’s warnings to them to rethink their actions failed to be heard. He was promoted to Anbu Captain by Danzo at the age of 12 and Hiruzen accepted his request. His publicly reported promotion age was 13 years. Despite the desire of the Third Hokage to engage with Uchiha, Danzo Shimura realized that Uchiha’s existence was not possible.
Itachi was informed by him about the situation and offered him two options. He could either support the Uchiha’s revolution, have all the clan members killed in the following war, or accept the mission of destroying the clan before the coup, and save Sasuke. Itachi went along with his brother.
Itachi Uchiha agreed to the execution of the slaughter under certain conditions. Danzo Shimura used Itachi’s protective nature to make the agreement sweeter. He said that Itachi would carry out the attack and take the fall to save Sasuke. He agreed, not realizing that Itachi’s actions would send Sasuke on a path to vengeance that would lead to Itachi’s demise.
Itachi was extremely dedicated to Konoha as evident by his actions and took his oath of village shinobi seriously. Itachi was warned by Konoha operatives that another world war could erupt if his family was successful. Itachi was determined that this would not happen and carried out the horrible scheme.
While making final preparations, Itachi noticed a man in a mask walking around Konoha. He realized that the man was Madara Uchiha and intent to incite a new war. Itachi offered him a deal: He would help “Madara wipe out the Uchiha” in retaliation to their abandonment decades earlier. In exchange, Madara would spare the village.
Itachi regretted killing his Clan members
Itachi regretted his decision and was afflicted by remorse. Shisui wouldn’t forgive him for the destruction of his clan. He remembered his father’s advice to him that he shouldn’t let others dictate his decisions and vowed to follow his own path. Itachi did not regret killing his clan. Itachi’s only regret was not having informed Sasuke of any of his business, which caused Sasuke to take the wrong path.
Itachi didn’t feel guilty about killing the Uchihas, even though he knew that they were trying to disrupt the peace in the Hidden Leaf Community. Itachi was someone who wanted to keep the village peaceful. He tried to find a balance between the Uchihas and the village at all times. He tried his best, but eventually he realized that Danzo was like the Uchihas and he had to kill the clan for village peace.

He was about to execute Miko Uchiha and Fugaku, and he was shown sobbing. But those were his feelings as a child. Itachi was a person who wanted the greater number of people to be benefited. He used nonviolent tactics to persuade minorities to change their views, such as the Uchiha clan. He did the best for Leaf Village, and he never regretted any of his actions so long as they were in the best interests of the community.
Itachi was passionate about the preservation of Konoha. He devoted himself to Konoha more than his tribe. He also found his clan to be highly contradictory as they didn’t share Itachi’s vision for Konoha’s destiny. Itachi wanted Konoha to remain protected as a single family. He didn’t regret the massacre, even though he knew Konoha was in bad shape if it wasn’t for him.
He may regret that he had to leave Sasuke because he knew that his Sharingan would make Sasuke’s life a nightmare. Although he felt terrible about killing his parents, he knew he couldn’t do it. But it was for the good of the whole town.
