The stars are finally aligning. HBO Max has set a premiere date for the second season of the rom-com series Starstruck Season 2. The streamer revealed that they will release six episodes of the next season on Thursday, creating an unproductive Thursday.

The characters had great chemistry. The storyline was sweet and simple with just the right amount of tension. It was just what I needed at the time. I loved the first season, and I can’t wait to see the second!

What to Expect from Season 2 of Starstruck.

Starstruck is a series that offers many surprising, yet counterintuitive choices. They’re sometimes so obvious that they seem almost incomprehensible, but they defy many of the accepted standards in romantic comedy. Its star, Rose Matafeo from New Zealand, created the series and co-wrote it. She is unique, charming, and down-to-earth, but not in romantic comedy’s usual way. She is, however, not perfect in all aspects, except for one issue that has resulted in her being single for life. The romantic premise of a regular person falling in love with a movie star is a popular one. But Starstruck frames this as a daily annoyance. Jessie and Tom (Nikesh Ptel), are approximately the same height. This is a shocking observation, and one that’s almost laughable in rom-com land.

The very first scene of season 2 is one of my favorites. It’s a simple, but interesting choice. It airs on HBO Max on Thursday. It begins exactly where season 1 ended. Jessie, Tom and their luggage are being carried to the airport. Jessie plans to board a plane to return to New Zealand. She doesn’t have a successful career in London and has no family. It is not logical to spend her time in London where there are few close friends. Jessie’s and Tom’s relationship is casual, but it has been fun. No one has made any serious declarations. Season 1 ends with the bus coming up to the stop where Jessie should take off for the airport. Then she doesn’t. This is exactly what Starstruck excels at: translating giddy romantic tropes in everyday settings and situations. The usual move in this type of story is to jump ahead and skip to the section where the leads are madly in love but then have problems — you get the idea.

This is not Starstruck’s MO. The moment Jessie decides she wants to stay, Season 2 begins. Tom and Jessie are in love! They are in love! It’s going to be amazing! Jessie starts to spin a bit as the bus continues driving. How does this work? After this dramatic farewell, she can’t bear to return to her apartment. She quit her job. All her money was spent on the return flight. It hasn’t been easy to forget the uncomfortable, semi-surreal distance between her and Tom. Tom doesn’t know what to say, and she’s not sure what she wants. They circle one another’s emotions and avoid looking at each other. This is also incredibly romantic. This is a beautiful sequence with a lot of awkward missteps and grand gestures that go terribly wrong. It has a great thrill of emotional realism. It’s also quite appealing, because it’s not surprising that this awkward day is even part of the story’s first act.

This is the basis for Starstruck. Although the series is a romantic comedy, it has the narrative focus slightly off-center. There are some big arguments between Jessie and Tom, but the focus is mostly on the buildup and the aftermath. While there are some heartwarming romance set pieces, Starstruck is just as interested in the way the couple navigates those moments as it is in the moment.

Two things are derived from Starstruck‘s fundamentally off-center romcom structure. First, even though the show is short and sweet (like the first season, it only has six episodes), its world is well-drawn. Jessie and her roommate have their own personalities and quirks. Her job at the movie theater is filled with funny and odd textures. Every set is packed full of little props, costumes and lighting elements that make each set feel unique and well-used. Jessie has a messy room and her bed is always rumpled. Jessie is enraged by her film club, which consists of herself and two older women. These scenes have little narrative momentum, but add depth to Jessie’s world. Tom lives in an oddly clean apartment and goes to work at a classy, reserved restaurant. This doesn’t directly explain why they are fighting, but it gives everything more context and urgency.

Another important result of Starstruck‘s outlandish approach is that Jessie & Tom are defined more by their individuality than what they do in a relationship. This is a common feature in romance novels and rom-com movies. You meet the protagonist and then meet her romantic lead, and you can immediately feel how they are constructed. Their lives and personalities are designed to meet that goal. This model is appealing, I’m not going to lie. It creates a magnetic certainty that’s incredibly comforting. You never doubt that the couple will succeed. It also means that there are two people who don’t have the same structural integrity as each other.

Season 1 of Starstruck, as we all know, was a huge success. It combined comedy and romance with a great plotline.

Season 2 dates have been confirmed so we can expect more drama and romance. Jessie will stay in London with Tom rather than returning to New Zealand. Both will work together to improve their relationship.

A normal girl meets a celebrity man, they fall madly in LOVE, get married and live happily ever thereafter. It’s definitely not. Starstruck is the story of Jessie, a New Zealander girl who lives in London and struggles to make sense of her life. She accidentally gets into a relationship with Tom Patel (Nikesh Paltel).

Rose Matafeo wrote and directed Season 1 of Starstruck. It was created with the assistance of Alice Snedden. The show quickly became the BBC Three’s most-watched new comedy and was greenlit for its second season on February 7, 2022.

Meet-Cute

Jessie, her reticent roommate, and best friend Kate ( Emma SIdi ), make the most of their free time and go clubbing to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Jessie is left alone to her own devices and entertainment while Kate finds a man-friend who’s interesting in talking to. As the night progresses the audience sympathizes with Jessie while she waits in pain for the female toilet, while simultaneously noticing the empty male restroom.

She cannot resist the temptation of no wait and walks into the men’s area. There, she immediately distracts herself by doing awkward impressions of James Bond in front of mirrors. Unexpectedly, a man enters a cubicle to correct her Bond impression. Jessie doesn’t notice the second-hand embarrassment of the audience as she starts to question Tom about his cubicle. They have banter and chemistry from the beginning that feels genuine.

Becoming the Other Woman

After spending the night together, Jessie wakes up in Tom’s fancy apartment and discovers that Tom is an actor. After confronting Tom about it and bickering over whether the topic was ever discussed the night before, Jessie discovers that he has a girlfriend. This disappointment caused Jessie to leave Tom’s apartment and not say anything. The paparazzi then confront her, assuming that she is his cleaner.

Moving on

After putting aside their New Year’s Eve connection, Tom and Jessie carry on with their lives without any real connections or relationships. He is looking for more depth in his roles, and perhaps his life. Tom, after months of silence, reaches out to Jessie for help in preparing for his audition in Australia. They soon settled into their normal conversation and banter, which has become a part of the fun for everyone. Tom is graciously invited by Kate to join her for dinner. The audience notices that Tom, even though he is well-known and surrounded with ‘civilians,’ he easily blends in with Jessie, her friends, and is well-liked by them. Both Tom and Jessie hope for the best in their relationship and end the dinner with a misunderstanding that leads to them having to part ways as friends.

Screening of the Film

A couple of more months pass and Kate receives an invitation to Tom’s premiere screening in the mail. Jessie and Kate are both invited as an added bonus. Jessie and Kate are both captivated by the film. Tom is also embarrassed to be associated. Tom and Jessie meet in the bathroom, despite not watching the film. Jessie ends up in Tom’s hotel room and provides support to him in his filmmaking. Their spark and genuine love is renewed, but not until Tom’s ex-girlfriend, whom he is now dating, shows up in their hotel room. Jessie rushes into the bathroom to hide from the rest of the evening. They are betrayed once more and have an explosive argument about their differences, which ends in them parting ways.

The Pre-Christmas Dinner

Christmas is here, bringing an end to the season. Jessie is driven by an existential crisis that she experienced after her argument with Tom. She also lost her job. Jessie decides that England was not the right place for her and that it’s best to return to New Zealand. Tom is similarly down and struggling to find meaning in his life, and he splits with his girlfriend. Kate is out shopping for Jessie’s pre-Christmas and going away dinner and bumps into Tom. She invites him to join her.

Jessie says that she plans to permanently leave the next day after a strange, but warm greeting. Both of them apologize for their arguments months ago and eventually admit that they want to remain in each other’s lives. Jessie still plans to go home, however. Tom offers to take Jessie to the bus station after they have spent the night talking and are reluctant to part. They board the bus together and ride it to Jessie. The driver of the bus stops and waits for them both to get off. The bus continues driving, but neither of them move.

What’s the story of Starstruck season 2 and its plot?

We’ll continue from season 1 and see what happens to Jessie after she decides to stay in East London to pursue a relationship, rather than following her original plan to return home to New Zealand. This is not going to be easy!

The film also features Being Human star Russell Tovey who plays a snarky film director who clashes and adds drama. We also meet Tom’s family, who are more than happy to take him down a notch or two. The introduction of new characters gives us more insight into the complex relationship between Jessie & Tom.

Season 2 will pick up from season 1. Jessie will have to confront the consequences of her grand gesture towards the end of season 1, when she decided to stay in East London to pursue her relationship with Tom, rather than following her original plan to return home to New Zealand.

We don’t know much about season 2 except that we can expect lots of dramatic and hilarious moments, if we look at the first season.
