Chakra in Naruto is a substance that is native to certain lifeforms. It is the component that creates Chakra Fruit. The Otsuki Clan travels from one planet to another to absorb the chakra and create the fruit.
Origin of Chakra in Naruto
On Earth, humans didn’t have chakra until Hamura and Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki were born with it, which was a result of their mother Kaguya eating their planet’s chakra fruit from the God Tree.
Hagoromo spread chakra to others through a practice called ninshū, intending to create peace by using the chakra to connect people’s spiritual energy so that they would understand one another without even talking.
However, the people did not use chakra in the way Hagoromo hoped, instead using it to connect their inner spiritual and physical energies. They kneaded their inner chakra to amplify and weaponise it, creating what is now known as ninjutsu.
Overview of Chakra in Naruto
Chakra is essential to even the most basic jutsu. Through various methods, the most common of which is hand seals, chakra can be controlled and manipulated to create an effect that would not be possible otherwise, such as walking on water, exhaling fire, or creating illusions.
Chakra is ordinarily not visible to the unaided eye unless it is highly concentrated or manifested in large amounts. This is rarely seen due to the restrictions of eight specific tenketsu known as the Eight Gates, which limit the amount of chakra an individual can release at a single given time.
Since being spread by Hagoromo, better known as the Sage of Six Paths, chakra has become a form of life energy that all individuals produce to some degree; those who run out of chakra will die.
Produced within and manipulated by organs such as the heart, the energy circulates throughout the body in a network called the “Chakra Pathway System”, which is similar to the cardiovascular system. Groups such as shinobi have learned to generate more chakra and release it outside their bodies through pressure points called tenketsu in order to perform jutsu.
Chakra is created when two more primal energies, known collectively as one’s “stamina”, are moulded together. Physical energy is collected from each of the body’s cells and can be increased through training, stimulants, and exercise. Spiritual energy is derived from the mind’s consciousness and can be increased through studying, meditation, and experience.
These two energies becoming more powerful will in turn make the created chakra more powerful. Therefore, practising a technique repeatedly will build up experience, increasing one’s spiritual energy, and thus allowing more chakra to be created.
As a result, the ninja is able to do that same technique with more power. This same cycle applies for physical energy, except the ninja needs to increase their endurance instead. Some unique individuals have substantial potential that enables them to exponentially increase their chakra reserves in a relatively short amount of time.
At any given time, a ninja will have a “maximum” amount of chakra that they can form and use before it runs out and they need to rest to replenish it. With practice this maximum can be increased, but to a certain extent as they are limited to the quantity and strength of chakra that their genetics grants them.
For instance, Kakashi Hatake has average chakra reserves, but no amount of training can grant him the same amount of chakra as Naruto Uzumaki whom he stated had more chakra than himself.
If a body is given far more chakra than it is able to handle, then the body would potentially be killed by the overwhelming chakra, as Fūka had to divide the chakra she absorbed into different bodies, a Kumo-nin who ate Gyūki’s chakra meat tentacle died instead of acquiring part of its power, and the reason why Isshiki Ōtsutsuki chose not to resurrect in Jigen’s body due to it being unable to handle his massive chakra.
Each person’s chakra is different and as such gives off a unique chakra signature, which sensor type ninja are able to detect. Chakra signatures are passed genetically, allowing a person’s clan to be identified by their chakra;over time, entire populations can have perceptibly different chakra.
One’s chakra signature can be altered by absorbing DNA from multiple people, mixing various chakra signatures together to become a whole new one. In the anime, chakra signatures that are similar to each other (such as that of a parent and child) are suggested to resonate when near each other.
Each person’s chakra also has a unique “colour” that can be seen by those with dōjutsu (the anime tends to colour all normal chakra light blue). Even if they are separated, changes made in the chakra signature of the original will result in the separated chakra mimicking those changes.
While practically all types of jutsu require chakra to be performed, taijutsu does not; stamina is all that is needed. While the ninja still needs a set amount of chakra to live, regular taijutsu doesn’t require any active moulding or manipulation of chak
Chakra Control
It takes time to build chakra and requires a lot of training. The key to using it is not having too much chakra, but being able enough to control and conserve it. This is chakra control. To be able to control their chakras, a ninja must only mold as much chakra as is necessary to achieve a given ability.
They will become tired faster if they mold more chakra than they need. A technique that doesn’t have enough chakra will fail, and they may face problems in combat situations. Chakra is a part of spiritual energy. If the user doesn’t have enough chakra, the technique won’t work.
The Leaf Concentration and Tree Climbing are all good training methods to improve one’s ability to manipulate chakra. It is a good way to increase chakra control skills. Shinobi who are skilled in chakra control are often genjutsu specialists or medical-nin.
Chakra control can be used to sober yourself after drinking alcohol. This is a more casual application. Shino tells Mei Terumi not to get too drunk at their meeting, and Mei Terumi shows this ability.
The chakra can be used to enhance performance. It can be used to enhance physical performance by forming the chakra in key points of your body, such as the hands and feet.
This skill can be used by some shinobi to obtain a speed increase, a sixth-sense and even perform superhuman striking. It is demonstrated in the anime that moulding your chakra can improve your mental prowess.
Two methods for manipulating chakra when creating a Ninjutsu are used: shape transformation or nature transformation.
- Shape transformation is about controlling one’s form, movement and power of the chakra. It also determines the size, range and purpose of a technique.
- Nature transformation is the altering of the properties and characteristics of a chakra’s nature to make it more useful in a variety of techniques. The Yang and Yin nature transformations deal with the alteration of the proportion of spiritual and physical energy within a chakra.
Both of these methods can be used together or separately to create a technique. However, ninjas who can do both simultaneously are rare.
Different types of Chakra in Naruto
Chakra of the Tailed Beast
Main article: Tailed BeastsThe tailed beasts (Wei Swu , biju), sometimes referred to as “Chakra Monsters” (chiyakuranobakemono, Chakura no Bakemono), are the nine titanic living forms of chakra created by the Sage of Six Paths out of the chakra from the Ten-Tails.
They are differentiated by the number of tails they have, ranging from one to nine. The chakra of a tailed beast is red.
Senjutsu Chakra
Main article: SenjutsuSenjutsu is a specialized field of jutsu which uses natural energy. Senjutsu practitioners are called sages and learn to draw energy from their bodies.
They then blend it with their own chakras to create senjutsu Chakra (Xian Shu chiyakura or senjutsu chakura; English TV: Sage Jutsu Chakra). This chakra gives the user a new level of power and allows them to use techniques that are not possible otherwise.
Absorption Chakra
The Demonic Statue of the Outer Path produces the Absorption Chakra (Xi Yin chiyakura and Kyuin Chakura). It can also be released from its mouth as phantom Dragons.
Any chakra touched by these dragons will stick to them, which allows them to kill humans in a matter of seconds. The Sealing Method: Phantom Dragons Nine Consuming seals uses nine of these dragons to extract the tailed beast chakra from the jinchuriki, or seal the beast directly into the statue. However, this technique can take several days.
Chakra Six Paths
Six paths Chakra (Liu Dao Chiyakura, Rikudochakura), is the unique chakra for Hagoromo Otsuki. Six Paths chakra can also be obtained from Hagoromo by combining Indra’s and Asura’s chakras to create the Rinnegan or becoming the jinchuriki the Ten-Tails.
Different characters have used similar “powers”, but it is not clear what relationship they have to the Six Paths chakra.
- Naruto Uzumaki infuses his Truth-Seeking Balls (Liu Dao NoXian Ren Chiyakura, Rikudo No Sennin Chakura) with Six Paths Sage Chakra. This allows him to destroy shadows of Madara Uchiha.
- Sasuke Uchiha uses Six Paths Power, Liu Dao noLi, Rikudo no Chikara, against Madara’s shadow. Kakashi Hatake receives a brief amount from Obito Uchiha. Their Lightning release chakras change colour when they use them.
- You can divide the Six Paths Yang and Yin powers between people so that Six Paths — Chibaku Tensei can all be done together.
Hamura’s Chakra
Like Hagoromo’s chakra, Hamura Otsuki has special properties. It is almost identical to Six Paths Chakra. It was passed down through the bloodlines from the Otsuki, and Hyuga clans.
Only Hamura’s chakra is able to touch the Tenseigan, and thus can destroy it. It was interesting to note that Hinata’s chakra changed colour from dark purple to dark purple when she used the chakra she received form Hamura.
Gift of the Hermit Group
Main article: Gift of the Hermit GroupThe Gift of the Hermit Group (Xian Zu noCai / Senzoku no Sai, English TV: Gift of the Sages), is a special type of chakra that the Fire Temple’s ninja monks use.
To master it, you will need to practice it daily. This chakra is needed to open the Sealed Iron Wall, allowing access to the Fire Temple. It is also necessary for the technique Welcome Approach: Thousand-Armed Morder.
Star Chakra
Main article: The Mysterious peacock Method As seen in the anime, the chakra-enhancing meteorite allows shinobi to manipulate their chakra to create a variety of skills. However, this can cause severe damage to their bodies. The name Mysterious Peacock comes from the chakra’s raw form as pinkish-purple tail feathers that look like a peacock’s tail feathers.
Negative Chakra
Negative Chakra can be used to nourish Nue to explode. Nue and Sumire also use it to take control of their negative emotions and to give them to another person.
Dark Chakra
Main article: Zero Tails. As seen in Naruto Shippuden: Bonds, Dark Chakra is a special chakra made from negative emotions. It is created by the Zero-Tails, which feeds on the negative emotions of the surrounding people.
It can be used to power the Land of the Sky’s Ancor Vantian. It also grants Shinno strong techniques with almost no drawbacks. It requires good chakra control. Shinno’s body was severely damaged when his control was compromised.
Priestess Chakra
Main article: Bell (charm). As seen in Naruto Shippuden, the Priestess Chakra (Wu Nu Chiyakura, Miko Chakura), has a bright, unique aspect. It can send pink light at users Shion, creating a light barrier that protects her from the dark and transforms her into an angelic form.
The mystical chakra of a bell was used to create a protective circle around a target. She also used it to form the Super Chakra Rasengan. Miroku was afraid that Shion’s powers could be corrupted and make her more dangerous than a huge demon_.
Ryumyaku Chakra
Main article: RyumyakuSeen as the Ryumyaku in Naruto Shippuden: The Movie: The Lost Tower, The Ryumyaku (Long Mo, English TV: Ley Line) is an ancient source for chakra that flows under Roran. It grants anyone who harnesses its infinite chakra reserves unlimited chakra. Only the royal bloodline heirs can open or close this flow. However, anyone can use it after it has been opened.

- Chakra is a term used in Hinduism to refer to seven spiritual power centers within the human body, including the tailbone and sacrum, stomach, stomach, stomach, heart, throat and forehead.

Obito was able to return as a spirit from afterlife by using chakra to inhabit Kakashi. This is similar to chakra’s nature, which is the fusion between spiritual and physical energies.
- Chakra signals can be transmitted over long distances using Chakra signals (chiyakuraXin Hai, Chakura Shingo).
- A chakra from another being can cause permanent and temporary changes in one’s body. After gaining Kurama’s chakra through eating its flesh, the Gold and Silver Brothers developed whisker marks similar to Naruto’s on their cheeks. Sasuke was permanently affected by a Rinnegan after Hagoromo gave him chakra. After Obito’s spirit and energy temporarily inhabits his body, Kakashi’s regular eye temporarily transforms into Sharingan. These genetic changes may be at a genetic level, such as the whisker marks that Naruto’s children inherited from him: Boruto or Himawari.
- Naruto the Movie – Legend of the Stone of Gelel shows that Temujin, the Continent, is unaware of chakra and how to use it.
