When Will Deadpool 3 Release Date?

Deadpool 3 continues to be awaiting an official release date and with Phase Five of the MCU booked up, we might be in for a long wait.

Marvel Studios has held some big panels recently at Comic-Con and at the D23 Expo, but the threequel was nowhere to be seen. Don’t lose hope though, as we’ve had plenty of updates to confirm it is going on.

Fans of the franchise were worried that the latest movie will not take place due to several reasons, the pandemic included. But, recent reports prove that Deadpool 3 is already in development under Marvel Studios as part of the Disney-Fox deal.

Deadpool 3 release date

As stated above, Deadpool 3 has been confirmed by Marvel Studios, but we’re still waiting on an official release date.

Following Comic-Con, fans speculated that perhaps the third movie could squeeze into Phase Five on February 16, 2024. Disney still has an “untitled Marvel movie” due out that day, but that would not be the case.

The delays in a confirmed release date may be due to the behind-the-scenes changes with the threequel’s writers. It’s unclear if Reese and Wernick have started from scratch or if they are working from the previous script.

Should we see Deadpool in the MCU before Deadpool 3?

In a way, we already have. In July 2021, Deadpool and Korg (from Thor Ragnarok, played by Taika Waititi) appeared together in a promo for the Ryan Reynolds-starring movie Free Guy. Incidentally, giantfreakinrobot.com has reported that Reynolds is keen for Korg to appear in Deadpool 3.

Much more likely, though, is that we will see Deadpool in some MCU assignment or other even before Deadpool 3. It could just be a cameo, but with the multiverse opening up wide, we’d be surprised if there weren’t some foreshadowing for the Merc with a Mouth in an earlier film or TV show. In the end, if he does have to swear, he will be bleeped out, and then he could burst off on a meta-rant about censorship.

In August, Reynolds himself teased to comicbook.com that he might make an early appearance in the MCU instead of waiting for his very own film:

“I think both (tactics) are pretty warranted,” said Reynolds. “I think you’re always gonna zig when everyone’s expecting you to zag with regards to that character. As long as Disney’s open to doing something pretty wildly divergent or having some wildly divergent uses of Deadpool, then I dig it, man. I think it’s all great.”

Deadpool 3 plot

Deadpool’s integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be quite hard, but this film may be an opportunity to introduce other Fox characters into the MCU via cameos. Because Deadpool is known for breaking the fourth wall, he could be the perfect narrator to connect Fox and Disney storylines.

Deadpool 3 may also be a soft reboot for the franchise, effectively moving the Disney Deadpool away from the Deadpool that we associate with Fox. Aside from this possibility, we might also see Deadpool time-traveling.

By the end credits of Deadpool 2, we learn that Negasonic Teenage Warhead has repaired Cable’s time machine. She passed the contraption over to Wade who traveled through time to correct all his errors in the past (including one where we see an alternate Ryan Reynolds holding a Green Lantern script). He even tries to kill a baby Hitler. These end credits present us with the opportunity that Deadpool may integrate through the MCU via time travel.

Shawn Levy too is a busy man with Stranger Things and other projects, so it’s not clear if filming will start in 2022.

Deadpool 3 cast

If there’s one certainty in life, it’s that Ryan Reynolds will reprise the role of Wade Wilson for Deadpool 3. Nobody else has confirmed their involvement yet, so we’re going to need to be patient about who is joining Reynolds.

Marvel fans had thought he’d pop up in Doctor Strange 2 as he was supposedly on the poster, but that never panned out.

Reynolds has technically already made his MCU debut in an ad with Thor: Ragnarok character Korg, as well as getting a name drop in the Avengers Campus journey Avengers Assemble: Flight Force.

Deadpool 2 brought us to a selection of new heroes too with the X-Force group and even though some did not survive long enough, we could see the likes of Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz) again.

However, Beetz is not so sure she’ll be back as she revealed in March 2021 that she hadn’t heard anything about a role and as of March 2022 (a full 12 months later) still hasn’t heard a thing.

In August 2022, Beetz changed her tune slightly and appeared to hint at a return: “Well, I can’t, obviously, really say anything, but I feel lucky. I just can’t really divulge or say anything, so we’re going to see, I guess.”

Fellow teammates Colossus (Stefan Kapičić), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna) and Russell (Julian Dennison) will probably round out the X-Force group if we see them again, perhaps with Peter (Rob Delaney) in tow.

Fans should not hold out much hope to see the likes of Shatterstar (Lewis Tan) and Zeitgeist (Bill Skarsgård) return for Deadpool 3, but superheroes always cheat death in the comics, so never say never.

We can quite safely say Blind Al might be returning thanks to a tweet between Reynolds and Leslie Uggams, who plays the roommate.

One character who already cheated death (as long as Deadpool 2’s post-credit series is canon) in the franchise is Vanessa, Deadpool’s girlfriend, and it’s safe to assume that she’ll return for the sequel too, although Morena Baccarin hasn’t confirmed anything yet.

She previously defended Vanessa’s lack of screen time in the sequel with fans accusing the film of ‘fridging’ her. “I can understand that people felt that way and I actually was disappointed that I didn’t have more to do, because I just loved the part so much,” she said.

“But in looking at the film and reading the script, it felt like such an emotionally pivotal role in the film and the entire arc of his character within the film is set into motion because of what happens to my character.”
