Grey’s Anatomy Season 19. Fall is upon us, and we are just weeks away from the new season of Grey’s Anatomy, albeit with appreciably less Ellen Pompeo this go-round, after it was reported that the executive producer and Meredith Grey actress would be appearing in a “limited capacity” in Season 19. But a new season also means some new faces, with a fresh crop of interns about to make their debut.

The future of Grey Sloan Memorial is uncertain as we head into Season 19. The new season of Grey’s Anatomy will pick up after the dramatic events of the Season 18 finale, wherein the hospital’s residency program was canceled, spurring Bailey (Chandra Wilson) to quit and leaving Meredith with a choice between probably leaving Seattle or taking on as interim chief of surgery for the hospital.

It was still unclear at the end of the season what Meredith would do; the job would mean sacrificing her relationship with Nick (Scott Speedman), but that left matters on rocky ground after a huge fight in Bailey’s former office. Meanwhile, Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Teddy (Kim Raver) went on the run after Bailey discovered that Hunt helped a couple of veterans with physician-assisted deaths after their terminal lung disease diagnoses. Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Preview

The promo for the Season 18 finale of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy asked the question “Will she stay or go?” After a dramatic and emotional hour finale, we got our answer: Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is staying in Seattle’s Grey Sloan and not transferring to Minnesota, at least for now.
But she is one of just a handful of doctors still working at the hospital by the end of the finale, which marked the return of Jesse Williams’ Jackson and Sarah Drew’s April and, fittingly for being the series’ milestone four-hundredth episode, featured plenty of flashbacks to the early seasons with the show’s original residents, Meredith, Christina, Izzie, Alex and George.

Meredith was envisioning them in the gallery as she was performing a volatile surgical operation, assisted by Nick, and then at the end, when Grey Sloan’s modern residents were packing their stuff, with the future of all those characters, including Levi, who’s a series regular, up in the air.
Despite Bailey’s best efforts and Jackson’s charm offensive, things went from bad to worse at the hospital that day, leaving Jamarah Blake without a choice but to shut down the teaching program so the hospital can start fresh and rebuild it.

The move left Richard with nothing to do, putting his future at the hospital in doubt. Moments later, Bailey quit but not before she let Owen and Teddy slip out after someone had reported Owen to her, exposing his physician-assisted suicide program after Owen and Teddy refused to just give him pills for his ill veteran spouse to die without examining her first. In yet another critical cliffhanger, Owen and Teddy were last seen on the run, flying on a plane with their kids, likely to another country.

As head of the foundation, Jackson offered Meredith to become an interim Chief Of Surgery, filling in for Bailey, which she ultimately accepted. (As she was making up her mind, Meredith evoked her late mother through both old pictures and some new ones, filmed for the finale by Kate Burton.)

But an earlier conversation, wherein Nick questioned Meredith’s judgment to perform the damaging surgical operation amid severe blood scarcity at the hospital, which ultimately led to the woman’s death, came back to haunt him. (Losing her patient also brought painful memories for Meredith, with the finale flashing back to Derek’s death.) Meredith confronted Nick at the end of the finale, telling him that he should probably go back to Minnesota. He walked out.

Meredith ultimately ran after him but by then he was gone, leaving that relationship and Nick’s future on the show very much in flux. No cast member is known to be leaving the show at the moment but the finale definitely raises plenty of questions and possibilities, making fans’ wait for the Season 19 premiere very suspenseful.
In a cliffhanger that would satisfy Japril fans, Jackson and April kissed in the elevator late in the finale, confirming that the exes have rekindled their relationship in Boston.

“It genuinely leaves open the possibility that you might be checking in with them,” she stated. “After the script was released, I had texts flying in from cast and crew asking if I was coming back next year because of how the episode ends. But as of now that is not on the table. It’s not something that anyone has discussed with me in any type of professional capacity. But there’s plenty of open-ended questions at the end of this episode. I think you’ll leave this episode with big question marks: Where do we go from here? How is the hospital going to recover? What is going to happen? What is the next year going to look like? So I think there are a million questions and a million possibilities.”

Drew added that, even while a full-time return is not possible given her commitments, she is always game for infrequent Grey’s appearances.
In other developments, Link and Winston had to make a Sophie’s Choice decision between keeping Simon alive and saving his wife who went into labor. With enough blood only for one of them, Simon made the decision himself, choosing to die but save his wife. Simon got to hold his newborn son for a few seconds before he took his last breath in one of the most emotional scenes of the finale.

Elsewhere, Amelia apologized to Link for breaking his heart and then reunited with Kai, Link and Jo rekindled their friendship after Jo broke up with Todd, Maggie questioned whether she and Winston did not marry too quickly without getting to know each other well but he later largely erased her doubts with an emotional speech, and Catherine got good news about her cancer prognosis.

“My mind is blown. All of our minds are blown,” Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff stated about presiding over the drama’s milestone episode earlier this week. New residents are coming to Grey Sloan! After the hospital’s teaching program was forced to disband at the end of Season 18, it’s going to rebuild in the new season, and the show is adding some new faces. Shadowhunters alum Harry Shum Jr. will lead the new pack as Daniel “Blue” Kwan, according to Deadline. He’s an older resident whose career was formerly derailed by a mysterious family situation. He’s joined by some new faces: Adelaide Kane (Reign), Midori Francis (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Alexis Floyd (Inventing Anna), and Niko Terho, who starred opposite Jake Borelli in Freeform’s The Thing About Harry. The latter four are first-year residents.

What Does the Season 19 Trailer Reveal?

Old characters and new ones alike are featured in the trailer for season 19, which dropped in September 2022. Day one fans will love the callbacks to earlier seasons: Levi Schmitt references the moment his glasses fell into a patient he was working on, Meredith recalls sleeping with McDreamy when she was an intern, as well as the in-jokes about returning stars. “Are you back?” Maggie asks Miranda, who simply replies, “I heard about the new class.”
