Valeria Season 2 Review

You will have read my Valeria season 1 review and know my feelings about this series. This season is basically the same as the first, but with a Spanish twist on Sex and the City.

Valeria is now in its second season. It follows the same strategy as its first. The run-time is split between the four main characters and their subplots.

Val returns to Madrid to face major decisions regarding her career and love life. After the first season’s love story, Val finds herself in a rut. This is something she has seen in her professional life as she continues to write novels. This story centers on Val’s struggles with Adri and Victor, which eventually leads to some closure (but also a huge cliffhanger) at the end.

Carmen and Borja indulge in their usual couple woes, while the girls are busy elsewhere. Although there are some nice moments throughout the season, Lola and Nerea are undoubtedly the weakest characters.

The style will not surprise anyone who has seen the first season. You can expect musical montages, crude humor and slapstick throughout the series. There will also be plenty of sex scenes.

One problem with the finale is that it tries to be cleverer than it should be. We show the weekend from four perspectives through this artistic endeavor. It’s not a good idea on paper and highlights some of its less desirable aspects.

Valeria is more reflective than the first season. Each character has a great story and episode 5 is a decent break as the girls reflect on what they want in their lives.

It doesn’t excuse Val’s behavior in the first season, though. She messes with Victor behind her husband’s back. This makes her a difficult character to get to know the second time.

It’s easy to feel that this is a pale imitation of Sex and the City. These ideas are very similar, down to the love triangles or some plot developments. Although the second season may be a slight improvement on the first, it is still not the best show in this dense and packed TV world.
