Yellowstone Season 5 Release Date: Everything You Need To Know

Yellowstone season 5 premiere is just months away. Many fans will be excited to see what the future holds. Although Yellowstone was not awarded a SAG Award, and it lost to Succession earlier in the year, this show of modern-western love has been loved by all who watch it. The show is now being spun off several times, including 1883, which follows the Dutton family led by John, patriarch of the largest ranch in the US. While some may wonder if 1883 is based upon a true story, others will eagerly await Yellowstone’s fifth series.

The Yellowstone/Dutton Ranch, bordered by Broken Rock Reservation, is being sought by developers. However, the Duttons won’t give up their land easily. What time will Yellowstone season 5 air? Who will return to action? How can you see all previous seasons?

Yellowstone before Season 5

YellowStone Season 4 Recap

Season 4 is more of a series of Wild West-style TV trope vignettes than a coherent story. However, the Season 4 finale marks a return to the original roots of the series. “Yellowstone,” Episode 10, continues this collage-like approach but uses its parade of “completely unhinged and out of pocket” scenes (via Reddit) to highlight some of the series’ most compelling themes. The series’ focus on progress and conservation is reinforced by “Grass on the Streets and Weeds on the Rooftops”, which provides viewers with valuable reminders of the psychology behind the Dutton children and the father figure who dictates their every move.

Interrogations about Yellowstone Season 4

Yellowstone’s finale is all about Beth

Season 4 was criticized for what many consider a tired “Flanderization” of Beth Dutton, one of the show’s most compelling characters. The series finale gives viewers a glimpse at Beth’s tragedy, and reminds them of her shark-like instincts, two-steps ahead intellect, and other things that have served Beth so well in past seasons.

Episode 9: Beth’s father is furious at her behavior and she starts packing to leave the ranch. It seems that Beth’s childish obsession to please her father will prevail over the stability and love she shares with Rip (Cole Hauser). But John insists that she stay. Beth’s mother died young and she was made to feel like it was her fault. She is determined to make amends to her father. This tragic mentality will stay with her. Beth later lashes out at Carter (Finn Little), when he calls her “Mama” as she walks past her new tween friend, Carter. He projects her feelings of guilt and loss onto her and it is difficult to determine who is more sad: the abandoned Carter or the little girl crying from the 35-year old woman’s mouth.

In the midst of her triumphant manipulation of her long-hated half-brother, Beth reminds Jamie (Wes Bentley), and viewers, why she views him as a man capable only of betrayal, cowardice, and omission. Beth has never had to deal with the painful abortion and sterilization that she endured at 15 years old. She will always see Jamie’s actions as the cause of her pain. It’s possible that the finale’s constant spotlight on Beth’s psychological traumas will bring back the nuanced character that captivated audiences in previous seasons.

Yellowstone’s final season reveals the true difference between Jamie Dutton and John Dutton

YellowStone before Season 5

In Episode 4, “Winning or Learning,” Jamie tells Kayce (Luke Grimes), that he has been fighting behind-the-scenes for the Dutton family. He reveals why Kayce and the ranch are not facing any charges for the vengeance that they have enacted upon the militia men of Season 3. Jamie insists that it doesn’t matter if Kayce defends his actions, saying “those were men who attacked our father.” He says that “there is what’s right” and “there’s the law.” They are not the exact same thing.

John Dutton reiterates Jamie’s mantra during his conversation with the judge after Summer’s (Piper Perabo) outrageous sentencing. John states that there is a distinction between legal and just. This strongly suggests that Jamie was taught this notion by John. The difference lies in how the men understand which of these sometimes contradictory ideas should win.

For John, justice takes precedence over legality. Jamie, a lawyer and not a seasoned rancher, believes that the law is superior to any individual’s knowledge of justice. If the law aligns with John’s view of justice, Jamie can accept it. John can’t seek out vigilante justice if the law forbids him from doing so. This is a potentially insurmountable difference that Jamie’s actions make even more difficult. John may have piles upon piles of bodies, gallons of blood, but it’s Jamie who commits the murders to protect his interests and those of Dutton.

Jamie’s situation will only get worse

YellowStone Season five

Season 5 promises to be worse for Jamie, an intelligent but emotionally disabled man. Beth meets the inmate hired to kill Jamie and learns that he is also there. She then seeks out the man and issues an ultimatum. She believes that Jamie knew his father was behind the hit but that he did not “blow his head off” when he discovered that. Beth offers Jamie two options. One that puts Jamie and his father in prison for the rest of their lives, and one that leaves them both dead.

Beth is leaving and she gives him another option. Jamie has the option to cut out the middleman and do the right thing from the start: kill his father. Jamie, who looks every inch of the conflicted but pragmatic “George”, eventually “Lennies” his father by shooting him in the head after they shared a touching moment. Beth follows Jamie as he disposes of his body and snaps a photo. She says, “You should’ve picked one of two options.” Jamie may be saved by Option 3. Beth says, however, that “You’re mine now.”

John shows some concern for Jamie when Beth returns to the ranch. He believes Beth has hurt him. He admits that Jamie is disappointed, but he still loves him. Beth, however, doesn’t seem to be able to stop him from killing him. Jamie pulls back just as it seems that Jamie may be able to get out from under the Dutton’s thumb. It’s impossible that he would ever betray them, even without Beth’s leverage. Jamie’s problem, much like Beth’s, is that he lives to please John.

Season 4 leaves viewers with many questions about Kayce

Yellowstone Season 4

Season 4’s conclusion may not be as dramatic as Season 3, but it still leaves viewers with many questions. While Monica (Kelsey Asbille), Kayce, and their relationship is only briefly mentioned in a few episodes of Season 4, Kayce’s vision of the mountain suggests that there are bigger things for them (like a storyline for Monica).

Kayce has flashbacks from his trauma as a Navy SEAL. He also interacts with his brother (aka Kayce’s proverbial Devil), Avery, Tanaya Beatty, who represents all things Dutton, temptation, infidelity, and an unknown female, which is the human representation that sparked his spiritual inquiry.

Kayce follows the wolf until he reaches a crossroads. However, the audience isn’t shown what lies beyond that path. Monica asks Kayce what he saw up the mountain. Kayce replies, “I saw all of us.” Although Monica clearly thinks that the “us” is Kayce and her, it’s not clear what their relationship means.

Season 4 is so full of hints about a devastation of the Duttons’ way of life, it could also be referring to something else. After reliving his experiences as a soldier, and denouncing the first two “temptations”, viewers are left wondering what Kayce sees. Kayce has been repeatedly portrayed as the most redeemable member of the Dutton family. It’s therefore likely that any decision he makes on the mountain could have significant consequences for Season 5.

In Episode 10, Jimmy & Lloyd portray Yellowstone’s principal conflict.

After finding love and himself at the Four Sixes Ranch, Texas, Jimmy (Jefferson White), returns to the ranch. When Jimmy returns to the ranch with his new girlfriend Emily (Kathryn Kelly), fired barrel racers Laramie and Jimmy (Hassie Harrison), they are there for some reason. In keeping with Season 4’s fist fights-before-storylines style, Emily and Mia throw down, and the latter leaves distraught. Although it’s tempting to view the fight as another macho scene, “that’s just the way it is here”, Jimmy’s exhaustion from all the drama at the Dutton ranch is what makes him decide to quit.

Lloyd, Jimmy’s ranch mentor, struggles to deal with the young friend’s decision. Jimmy is leaving behind a life that had held Lloyd captive for many years. Lloyd is happy that Jimmy found happiness but it’s a reminder that the ship has sailed for him. The Season 4 finale sees Lloyd fall into deep depression. This contrast is only made more stark by the contrast between his circumstances and the ranch hand’s.

In Episode 10, Jimmy & Lloyd portray Yellowstone's principal conflict.

Lloyd, on the other hand, isn’t able to see the harm in trying to keep a way of living that doesn’t exist. Jimmy can evolve. Jimmy and Lloyd’s opposing views on the Dutton ranch are a key theme in Yellowstone. This is the series’ central conflict. John’s conversation in the final demonstrates how John and Jimmy see it. It’s progression, evolution and pragmatism against tradition, nostalgia and romanticism.

Yellowstone season 5 plot

Fans are disappointed to learn that the plot for Yellowstone season 5 is still not confirmed. However, the season 4 finale does not give away all of the secrets that may be in store for viewers in November. The Duttons tried to find out who ordered the attack that occurred in Yellowstone’s unforgettable season 3 moment. Later, it was revealed that Jamie Dutton was the biological father of Garrett Randall (and the murderer and biological mother of his biological mother). Beth isn’t accepting Jamie’s efforts to not bring Garrett to justice.

She reveals what she knows and gives Jamie one choice. He takes it before she tells Jamie that he has a huge secret over his head. Beth married Rip Wheeler in Yellowstone season 4. Although it is not yet clear where our favorite characters will be in the next season, with Beth and Jamie’s secrets still looming large, it is likely that this will happen. The battle for the land between Beth’s former employers Market Equities, and the Dutton family is likely to continue.

John Dutton could still run for governor, despite Jamie’s wish. Kayce Dutton’s vision is unmistakable. Although he may have warned Monica that what he saw would be the end of them, viewers still don’t know what the Dutton brother has actually seen. This could be revealed in season 5, or it could be kept a secret as a recurring feature.
