Chainsaw Man (Japanese: チェンソーマン, Hepburn: Chensō Man) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto. It was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from December 2018 to December 2020, with its chapters collected in eleven tankōbon volumes. Because of its popularity, fans started to create theories about the best ship of the manga. Denji And Reze is the most beloved ship of Chainsaw Man at this moment, with the name: Reji.

What Chapter Does Denji Meet Reze?

Reze is among the many girls Denji loves in the course of the Chainsaw Man series, but in what chapter does Denji encounter Reze?

Denji meets Reze in Chapter 40, which is titled “Love Flowers, Chainsaw, and Flowers.” Chapter 40 is set during the “Bomb Girl” arc and it was published on September 29, 2019.

The relationship with the love of his life is only present during the arc and doesn’t return afterward.

The Story Behind How Denji and Reze Meet

Chapter #40 opens with Denji recalling the date he shared with Makima the night prior. His mood has completely changed, and he has declared that Denji must have an inner heart when he feels these powerful butterflies.

Makima is simply amazing. Talking to her has taken all my anxieties away.

Denji considers Makima’s offer that if he could collect the scattered pieces of the Gun Devil, she’ll grant him every wish. Denji decides to seek Makima to be real with her and vows not to be in love with anyone other than Makima.

A sudden storm rages and Denji is able to hide in a phone booth for shelter. After a few minutes, a brunette girl unlocks the booth’s door and enters the booth together with Denji. Reze begins to laugh, stating that Denji’s face reminds her of her dog who died.

To impress Reze, Denji regurgitates a flower that he took in prior to the storm. The flower was given to him as a present following his donation to a street charity that he then ate.

The rain has stopped as Reze looks happily at Denji.

Denji actually beats Reze to her workplace and is seated before she has time to wear her apron. She gives him coffee and begins to relax. Denji thinks she might be showing signs that she is interested in him.

“Oh crap. I am a fan of people who are like me. Please help me, Makima! I’m about to be a victim of this girl!”

Canon Denji And Reze

Denji and Reze first met during the downpour, when Denji sought refuge in an old telephone box. In the box, Reze joined him and discussed how hard rain was pouring down and he agreed. She begins laughing and declares that his face reminds her of her dog who died and Denji is shocked when he asks whether he looks similar to the dog. 

Then, he begins to gag at the point that Reze gives him a handkerchief before Denji removes the flower which he had eaten before putting it in his mouth. Reze asks if it’s magic, however Denji says it’s not. He takes a few seconds while looking at her face until the rain stops, and she emerges. She invites Denji to join her at the location she worked in, and provides him with the address.

He is apparently there earlier than she is, at which point the waiter orders a drink. Reze is asked to serve him and sits with him, and orders two coffees and will pay. When Denji begins drinking the coffee, he turns a disgusted look. Reze is shocked and declares that he’s forcing him to drink, while she rebuts that coffee is disgusting. 

She laughs and calls him a child as she smacks his shirt. Denji is somewhat shocked, and thinks she is in love with him. They exchange names and Reze states that Denji was the most fascinating person she’s ever had the pleasure of meeting. Denji is thinking about how he enjoys people who are like him and then begins to feel a connection with her. In his head, he calls Makima for assistance and he’s beginning to fall in love with her.

Since that time, Denji has kept coming to the shop and believes that his body is leading him towards her. When he arrives at the shop, Reze asks Denji to sit alongside her. They talk about school. Denji says that he’s never attended school, and Reze says it is bad. 

She then suggests that she instruct him and write down in Kanji “balls”. Denji says that she’s a pervert and that it’s the sole word he’s heard. Reze laughs, which sets Denji in shock. Later, Denji mutters that school is better with her. Reze smiles and suggests going to school with her during the night. Denji is happy to accept the suggestion and they join forces.

Then, Reze talks about how she’s afraid at night, and she asks Denji to take her hand. He obliges, and when they reach their classroom Reze puts down questions and then asks Denji to reply. Reze then suggests going to the pool before stripping her clothes. 

Denji is shocked and is then enticed to swim together, after she is joking with him and asks for his permission to swim. If it rains the couple go back inside and gaze out the window. Reze states that she needs to go to the bathroom. After she has left, Denji mentions how she’s “super super cute”. When she’s gone, Denji is talking to Pochita. Denji “talks” with Pochita telling her that he truly loves both Makima and Reze.

When Reze returns, she invites him for an event which is where they get together in private after having an enjoyable time. In the event, Reze says that he must stop devil hunting and live a happy life with her. In response, she promises to keep him safe for the rest of her life. 

Denji is frightened, and does not speak until Reze realizes that Denji is in love with a different person. She then kisses him but then she bites her tongue off. Then she takes the knife and cuts through his throat. She then cuts his hand before he pulls the chainsaw cord. She sits on her knees and kisses him back and apologizes for the hurt she caused him. She says she needs to take his heart away but before she does, Beam runs away with Denji.

When Denji saved her life, and saves her from death, she is invited to join him in the cafe, but Reze did not accept his invitation. Then, Reze had second thoughts of getting on the train, and decided to meet Denji at the cafe, only to be shot by Makima as she is near the cafe. Then, Denji is seen waiting for her at the cafe with a flower bouquet.

Fanon

ReJi is a very popular ship within the fandom in spite of DenMaki being the more well-known ship, ReJi is the most loved vessel for Reze. Many fans were grieved by the tragic death of Reze, and in their work, they would like to imagine what the two would have done should Reze had a chance to live. Certain fans like this character as it could be the more complicated version of the Enemies to Lovers trope.
