Marcus, Marcus’ co-worker, is killed by a mysterious black swarm, and the pair are accused of human error. K.C., a nerdy conspiracy theorist, is now ten years old. Houseman (John Bradley), who has stolen some documents, discovers that the Moon is in orbit and poses a grave threat to Earth. Brian, now out of work and paying late rent, is approached by Houseman. K.C. is not impressed. K.C. decides to make the information public via social media and NASA responds with an SLS Block 2 to investigate.

The mysterious swarm again attacks and all three crew members are killed. Natural disasters all around the world erupt as the Moon’s orbit continues its fall. Jocinda discovers that the Apollo 11 mission discovered evidence of the Moon’s hollow interior, just like K.C. theorized, but it was covered up by a radio blackout for two minutes. A military program to eliminate the swarm was proposed, but it was unable to be funded. Brian, Jocinda and K.C. put the EMP device in storage. It was then retrieved by Brian, Jocinda, and K.C. for launch.

They enter the Moon’s interior to find that it is siphoning energy from a white dwarf within the hollow “megastructure”. They learn that the Moon was created by humans, once more technologically advanced than their descendants. The swarm must be destroyed. The US President orders a nuclear strike against the swarm but the Chief of Air Force rejects it because he is married and makes sacrifices for his wife Jocinda.

Jocinda and Brian’s family return to Earth and head to Colorado to build a bunker and fight off natural disasters and other survivors. K.C. lures the swarm away, before detonating an EMP device and killing him. Brian and Jocinda are reunited after the Moon’s orbit slowly returns.

Moonfall concludes the Moon is not an actual planet, but a benign artificial intelligence that has been corrupted by humanity since its construction billions of years ago. The hieroglyphs depicting helicopters, batteries and the lost city at Atlantis all suggest that there was a primeval race far more intelligent than our current knowledge. One that literally created the Moon in Moonfall.

DOWNLOADING HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS

Transcendence (dir. Wally Pfister (2014), you will be familiar with the concept of downloaded consciousness. Johnny Depp plays a scientist who is shot with a polonium-laced bullet and has his consciousness transferred to a quantum computer. His new abilities are not only groundbreaking, but they pose a danger as he becomes corrupted with dangerous amounts of power.

In scientific circles, the theory of Whole Brain Emulation has been discussed for a long time. While Moonfall is not about this plot, Emmerich touches on it at the end of the movie when K.C.’s mind is uploaded to the Moon’s operating systems so that he can live on in some way. It seems inevitable that we will combine the two, having evolved from a world without technology to one in which our phones and computers have become a part of our identity and lives.

Emmerich did it here. We might have seen a better movie if Emmerich’s writing wasn’t so tedious, the dialogue not so repetitive, and the pace didn’t go at such a rapid clip. Moonfall was a box-office disaster due to its two-dimensional characters and absurd plot.
