Severance Season 1 Review & Ending Explained : What’s Happened ?

The thrilling Severance season 1 finale will be remembered as one of the greatest season finales in 2022. It is full of tension, anxiety and cliffhangers. The series’ twisty mysteries kept viewers guessing throughout the entire season.
Severance is a candid look at society’s obsession with maintaining a work/life balance. It introduced us to the concept of the “severance” procedure, which involves implanting a chip in one’s brain to surgically seperate life and work memories. In common parlance, the worker part is known as an “innie” while the life portion is known as an “outie”. The first season follows four innies working in the Macrodata Refinement section of Lumon’s shady corporation. They question their existence and rebel against it.
You probably already knew the details if you viewed the entire season.
The finale sees the innies attempt to discover more about their lives in real life. This episode lasts 41 minutes and, while it doesn’t answer all the viewers’ questions over the previous nine episodes, it provides many amazing moments of catharsis as well as suspense.
What really happened at the Severance final? To find out, you don’t have to reintegrate. We are here to help.
Severance Season 1 Review

Remakes and series that are based on true stories dominate television today. No favorite ’90s show, or recent news story is safe from the greedy grasps of TV executives. These shows are often great in their own right but lack originality. Apple TV +’s new series “Severance,” which concluded its first season on April 8th, has no such problems and is a compelling argument in favor of original content. This riveting science fiction thriller is among television’s most innovative, visually stunning, as well-rounded and original series.
Lumon Industries, a dangerous tech company, allows regular people to decide to “severe” their home and work lives. They can do this by implanting a computer chip in their brains. These people can’t access their personal memories while they are at work, and vice versa. Although the premise is similar to an episode of “Black Mirror,” “Severance,” which allows its characters and worlds to grow over an entire season, has a far more compelling story.
The show’s unique set design will likely impress viewers before they even notice the masterful performances. Instead of the typical American office, the show’s creators created an underground complex consisting of large and empty green-carpeted rooms linked by a maze made up of white hallways. The minimalist design and the retro technology used by characters to do mundane tasks adds a dark layer to every day. What are the hidden passageways leading to? These questions, and many more, will continue to puzzle viewers. They won’t believe Lumon’s idyllic façade.

Mark Scout is the main character of “Severance”, played by Adam Scott, who is also known for his role in “Parks and Recreation”. Scott does occasionally make witty remarks that could be compared to a sitcom on a network, but this is his best performance to date. It is amazing to see the gradual transformation of Scott’s facial expressions and body language over Season One from a peppy corporate shill into a concerned office deviant. Scott is even able to alter the tone of his character’s voice to the point that there is a distinct difference between his “innie” office and his “outie” home. This is truly a remarkable feat.
Scott is not the only actor in “Severance”, John Turturro and Patricia Arquette are also notable for their heavy-hitting talents. They all give amazing performances. Arquette’s combination of soft-spokenness with unbridled aggression makes her an engrossing villain. As the obedient Irving, Turturro is the star of the group. Although his character is very simple, Turturro manages to portray Irving’s inner struggles and triumphs in a way that will draw viewers towards him. He also gives Walken a remarkable level of trust and tenderness in his new relationship.
Britt Lower and Zach Cherry are less-known actors, while Tramell Tillman rounds out the ensemble with their own memorable flourishes. The brilliance of “Severance” lies in its ability keep viewers engaged with its multi-layered plotline. While it never fails to deliver a variety of characters that the audience can relate and love, it also manages to capture their attention with its complex plotline.

“Severance,” on the technical side, continues to excel. The camerawork of Jessica Lee Gagne and Matt Mitchell is particularly noteworthy, with long, smooth tracking shots sometimes being interrupted by jarring shaking at suspenseful moments. Another clever way that the show immerses viewers is by the stark contrast in lighting between home and work. The former is dark and oppressively bright, the latter is gloomy. Ben Stiller, who helmed six episodes of the series, is often at the forefront of these creative decisions.
No matter if viewers are science fiction fans or not, “Severance” will deliver. From dry workplace humor to the inexplicable question about Lumon’s greater purpose (which, err… involves baby goats?) there’s something for everyone. (online doctor zolpidem) This culminates into one of the most fascinating, stomach-turning and gasp-inducing seasons finales in recent history.
For anyone who is constantly at work and wishes they could speed up their home time, “Severance”, a frightening warning, warns: Be careful what your wish for.
What happens at the end of Severance season 1? : The ending Explained

Severance season 1 was a wild ride and the finale delivered big-time to keep that theme of absolutely blowing us minds.
Episode 9 begins with Dylan activating the overtime contingency plan and waking Mark, Irving, Helly, and Helly’s Innies in the outside world. Mark’s Innie wakes up in Devon’s house, where he’s hugging Harmony Cobel. Harmony is at the moment posing as Outie Mark and Mrs. Selvig. Mark calls her Cobel and alerts her to his Innie state. This prompts her to act to stop her employees from finding out what Lumon is up to, even though she was technically fired in an earlier episode.
Helly’s Innie awakens in the middle of the Lumon Gala. She discovers that she is actually (pausing for dramatic effect Helena Eagan), the daughter of Lumon CEO Jame Eagan. Her purpose is to speak at this gala to convince people of how important severance really is and why it should be legal for everyone. Now that Helly has awakened her Innie, and is aware of her own self, Helly won’t be the spokesperson for the company or the procedure that caused her and her coworkers all the misery.

Cobel realizes this and rushes to stop Helly from giving her scheduled speech. But it’s too late! Helly uses her platform for talking about Innies like her father, who were tortured and subjugated in their company. You KNOW that the next season will be a nightmare dealing with all of this!
Innie Irving is the next, who wakes up in his apartment to find his Outie’s military history, eerie artworks, and Lumon employee directories. This last one he uses to locate Burt. His safety is something he has been worried about and for whom his Innie cares deeply. Burt is a-living, a-thriving for him but… at what price? Irving must learn more about the man he loves and see him happily married to another man. This causes Irving to break his heart.

If you thought that was an emotional bombshell, think again. Mark’s wife, Gemma (whose death was the reason he took up the severance job at Lumon), might actually have been ALIVE the entire time! Even more tragically, it is possible that he was actually working with Gemma all along. It seems like Gemma, Ms. Casey, and the office wellness counselor are one in a million.
Before he can tell his sister, before Irving can confront Burt and before Helly can talk about the true experience of severance, their Innies are turned off. They’re forced to return to their Outie selves. This leaves us on a major cliffhanger.

FAQ About Severance Season Ending Explained

Can Harmony figure out who Mark really is?

Ricken takes the initiative to read portions from the book Mark has held on to as his personal religion within Lumon. Ricken approaches Ricken after he has finished his speech. Mark praises Ricken for his work and how it has impacted his life.
As Harmony Cobel is the link between these worlds, she notices Mark’s tenseness and asks him questions about it. Indirectly, she brings up Mark’s earlier utterance about wanting to leave Lumon and asks if he is still interested in the idea. Mark clearly doesn’t know what’s happening and tries to make it up as best he can. He calls her “Ms Cobel”, which is alarming for her, since everyone knows her as Mrs. Selvig.
Helly R. Why is she so important to us?

Helly is someone we knew was important, but now we know who. Helena Eagan is actually her daughter. Helly is thrust head-first into the world, and finds herself at the brink of giving a huge speech about the severed lifestyle.
These are all the pictures that Mr Milchick took throughout the season. They can be used as promotional images in black and white for important investors and businesspeople. They are about to vote whether to allow severance. Helly even sees Helena, her alter-self. She gives a promotional speech about how severance unites all of them.
Helly R finally meets Kier and shuffles to the bathroom. He asks her if she is in pain and mocks the “innie”, who attempted suicide.

Kier continues, bringing up the prototype chips, and the blue and green light back then. This was a consistent colour theme throughout the series. Kier hopes that everyone around the world will be able to obtain a severance card so they can be “his children.”
As Helly prepares to deliver her big speech, Kier, a megalomaniac boss and greedy capitalist boss is called off. Helly has reread those lines 1000+ times in the breakroom. She now has them in her mind and whispers them to her self in the mirror. Ready to make big changes.
What did Irving find in his apartment?

Irving, meanwhile, is found in his apartment and quickly opens a locked trunk that holds his father’s old navy gear. There are newspaper clippings that mention Lumon’s actions being held responsible. Here is a list of severed employees, including Irving. This list contains many names, addresses and even phone numbers. He immediately finds one for Burt, and he decides to go.
Why did Mark decide to work for Lumon?

He returns to Mark and speaks to his sister. Devon is shocked and Mark encourages her to contact investigators to sweep Lumon to discover the truth. Why did Mark choose to seperate? It was after he lost his wife, Gemma (whom, we know, is Ms Casey from our Wellness program).
Mark was a history professor and tried to keep teaching, but three weeks after her death is not enough time to grieve. The whole thing ended up being a disaster. Mark believed that the job he was being fired would free him from this part of himself, and did so out of kindness to spare his friend from any pain. Mark’s act of mercy was not malicious, unlike Helly’s.
Has Harmony’s true identity been revealed?

Soon, Mr Milchick picks up his phone to discover that the OTC had been activated. He charges down the corridors and tries to enter the office.
Mark explains to Devon that time is crucial and that Lumon appears to have a lot influence in the country. Devon feels shaken when Mark tells him that Harmony Cobel (Mrs Selvig), is his boss. “Jesus Christ.” He replies. Mrs Selvig is gone, Eleanor has taken her place in the bedroom’s car-seat and Mark experiences the greatest shock of his life when he discovers wedding photos of Gemma and Mark on the counter.
Did Helly give her speech?

Helly moves purposefully towards the stage, determined shake up the foundation of severance. Irving arrives at Burt’s house and takes a look inside. He not only finds Burt, but his partner as well. It breaks his heart.
Eleanor arrives and finds Helly in her back. She promises to make Mark’s and all others’ lives hellish, leaving them in pain but still alive when they get out. Helly takes the reins and holds Dylan, while Kier watches from the back. “I’m an Innie and everything they said about severance was a lie,” she pleads with the crowd. The crowd laughs at her joke, but they soon realize it’s a joke. “We are not happy, but we are miserable. They torture us down there. We’re prisoners.”
When does Severance Season 1 begin?

Mr Milchick broke into the security office and tackled Dylan to the ground. This subsequently knocked his fingers off the switches. Mark informs Devon that Gemma has survived. Helly delivers a bombshell speech, and Irving appears to be on his way to Burt’s house. All of our characters are back to their normal forms due to the switches being flipped. The fate of all of them is unknown.
The Episode Review

This was a stunning finale to an exceptional show. Severance’s themes and ideas have been extraordinary. The visual motifs that we saw in the 8 previous episodes, such as the recurring blue and red colours, were actually explained by Kier who happens to still be alive.
It remains to be seen if Kelly’s actions make any difference, but it is safe to assume that they won’t. Ricken and Devon will likely work together to discover the truth about Lumon and their lies about Gemma’s death. Why hide that?
There are many loose ends in this situation. Let’s take a look at Lumon and the reasons why severance matters. Their work could be random and not have any deeper meaning. It is a way to fix any chips-related problems before dispersing them en masse to different companies.

Final episodes are a bit disappointing. I know I was not the only one grumbling and wanting more.
Severance is one of the best shows this year, and it’s not hard to see why. The themes are timely, the ideas are presented in a thoughtful and poignant manner, and there is some great acting. This wonderful show, which has 40 million subscribers, is unfortunately stuck on AppleTV. It deserves a larger audience, it’s amazing!
Who is Helly’s Outie, and why are they so special?

Severance wasn’t going to let us down without first serving some jaw-dropping revelations. They reveal the identity of Helly’s outie within the first few seconds of the episode. Helly (Britt Low), the woman determined to escape Lumon, so much that she would rather die by suicide than live in that corporate hellscape for another minute, is Helena Eagan. She is the heir to Lumon’s throne.
Some clever Redditors knew this twist was possible by analysing context clues, camera cuts and suggestive dialog. This moment packs a huge punch, however, because we also witness innie Helly processing it. She is stunned. It’s easy for her to put her momentary lack of social grace on the champagne she was holding. But as she navigates the Eagan Family Gala, it just keeps getting more bizarre.
First, she is shown giant illuminated cubes depicting a false narrative about her Lumon experience. The exhibit is called “Helly R. A Severed Story”. It turns out Helena Eagan chose to be cut in order to show how “freaking incredible” it was to the rest. This could allow for severance to become more legal.
Irv’s Outie:

Although we don’t know as much about Irv’s dog as we do about Helly’s, there’s still plenty to learn. Innie Irv awakens and begins to scour his outie’s belongings.
It is obvious that Irv (John Turturro), is a decorated military veteran, as he has many medals displayed in his bedroom. His father was a Navy veteran. He finds a hidden compartment in his trunk that contains his father’s uniform. It’s full of research about Lumon’s business practices. The map contains a map and lists of the severed employees, both former and current.
Although it is not clear if Irv is working against Lumon or for him, the fact that this information was kept secret makes it seem like he is gathering information in secret. Where did he find this sensitive information? How is he able to find the time to read it all while he obsessively paints pictures of that hallway every night?
Are the Innies able to complete their mission successfully?

It’s kind of. The innies had agreed that they would find someone trustworthy to tell them all. Only Mark (Adam Scott), is able to complete this task. Irv discovers that he doesn’t have any friends, family or social support networks outside of his own home. Helly, poor Helly! No one in her world, not even her outie, is trustworthy.
Lumon: Will Cobel be Rehired?

Probably. Harmony Cobel was the one who stopped these shenanigans. Lumon might reevaluate her contribution to the company and think about reintegration. There is no way that a second season can be produced without Patricia Arquette. It’s a shame that Mrs. Selvig might be gone, as she was caught by innie Mark. I will miss her humorous little sayings.
How did Dylan keep those switches open for so long? !

It is possible that his outie does muscle shows in real life, am I right?
What Happens at the End?

Ok, all joking aside, the last 10 minutes of this episode are “I-forgot-to-breathe” good. You are not the only one who forgot to breathe.
Four separate cliffhangers were created for our four favorite innies over the last ten minutes. Helly is first.
Innie Helly has the greatest impact on the world as she speaks truth to power to Lumon management and distinguished guests at the gala. They initially think she is making fun of them, but she soon doubles down and says, “No. No. Listen. We are not happy. We’re miserable. They torture us there. We’re prisoners!”
This raises the question of whether this information will be released to the rest of the world. The gala was attended by many people who were strong supporters of Kier, Lumon and severance. It is possible that they will not allow the information to escape. Helly is allowed to speak her mind before she is taken down.
Innie Mark gets to share a key piece of information with the outside world before he switches off. Ricken, Devon and their guests are settling down after Eleanor is found. Mark then spots a photograph. It shows him and his bride on their wedding day. It’s his wife! It’s Ms. Casey! Mark rushes to his sister and grabs the photo. He shouts “SHE’S ALIVE!” just in time.

Innie Irv isn’t so lucky. He finds Burt’s information in his stash of loot. Burt is the only person that he trusts, so he walks over to the address his outie marked on the map. He sees through the window that Burt is in love with another man but innie Irv feels an urge to make contact with him anyway. He sprints up to the door, pounding on it and shouting “BURT!” Burt does not answer the phone in time to speak with Irv. What would Irv’s innie have said to Burt?
All of these emotionally charged things happen simultaneously . However, Dylan, the strongman, is intercepted by Milchick and the whole experiment is terminated. Mark flips the screen and switches back to Outie mode. This breaks the innie spell the episode had cast.

What’s next for Mark And The Gang ?

Although Apple TV Plus and Severance are yet to confirm the cast members returning for season 2, it is likely that all of them will, given that season 1 was completed mid-action.
Just before Milchick attacked Dylan and closed down the “Overtime” that allowed the innies to occupy outie bodies, Mark managed tell Devon, his sister, that Gemma was still alive. Devon knows that season 2 will see her working with Outie Mark in order to locate Ms. Casey (if “alive”), and free Lumon from her clutches.
Irving’s outie will be found on Burt’s doorstep. He will likely have no idea who he really is and have no memory of how he got there. Helly will need to deal with the consequences of violating company protocol and trying sabotage Lumon. This is all quite dramatic so it’s just another day at work for Severance.
