Dr. Vegapunk is a brilliant scientist who serves the Navy.

Appearance

A Marine from the G-5 base refers to him as “that elderly man”, making it clear that he assumes he is older than he actually is.

Character

He cared so deeply about the health and well-being of his peers in his youth that he attempted to help them by creating a geothermal heating method. He wept when he realized he couldn’t make it work. He is considered the pride and joy of their 🏝️ island, Karakuri. He is also a man who will grant the wishes of those around him. In fact, he even agreed to grant Bartholomew Bear’s last wish.

Relationships

Sentomaru

Sentomaru was Vegapunk’s personal bodyguard, but it is not clear what the relationship between the two of them is.

Bartholomew Bear

Vegapunk seems to be on good terms with Bartholomew Bear. In fact, he actually programmed him to protect the Straw Hat Pirates’ ship until they returned, a mission the Navy was clearly not interested in.

Caesar Clown

Vegapunk has been regarded as the world’s greatest scientist, and this has clearly influenced his relationship with his former colleague, Caesar Clown. It is evident that Caesar has little respect for his abilities from the way he addresses him. This only makes Caesar’s animosity towards Vegapunk worse until the Punk Hazard incident.

Vinsmoke Judge

Vegapunk and Judge were friends and collaborated on studying hereditary genetic factors.

Strength and ability

Vegapunk is a genius scientist.

His research has led him to the solution for Navy ships to avoid the danger of being attacked by Sea Kings by passing through bands of becalms by covering the bottoms of ships with a layer of agalmatolite. He is also responsible for discovering how the powers of a Devil Fruit affect people and how they can be given to inanimate objects.

He is the one who transformed Bartholomew Bear into a cyborg and has created many Pacifistas in his likeness, even giving them some of Kizaru’s Devil Fruit abilities. He even managed to artificially give life to two winged, fire-breathing 🐉 dragons.

He also created an artificial Devil Fruit. However, he still considers it to be a failure.

History

Past

Vegapunk was born in the Kingdom of Barjimoa, Karakuri. During his youth, he turned his home into a laboratory where he carried out numerous 🧪 experiments. He made cyborgs from the forest animals to be used as a workforce. In his laboratory, he created and built many pieces including robot animals which he later used as a workforce. He came up with hundreds of other ideas and projects including: weapons, warships, agalmatolite studies, Devil Fruit, cellular research, and even a geothermal heating system for the 🏝️ island. He was unable to complete many of his projects due to a lack of resources and tools for research.

Later, he worked with Vinsmoke Judge and Queen, a team of criminal researchers studying hereditary genes. The World Government deemed it dangerous and had the scientists detained. He then made the scientists work for him. Vegapunk then started to collaborate with the Navy.

One of Kaido’s arrests by the Navy led him to use Kaido’s genetic information to create an artificial Devil Fruit. The World Government tried to seize it, but it was later declared to be a failure. It remained in Punk Hazard.

Later he created 🐉 dragons in Punk Hazard to be able to guard the 🏝️ island. His colleague, two years before the beginning of this story, Caesar Clown invented and triggered a powerful chemical weapon, turning the 🏝️ island into a contaminated land. The former was taken into quarantine and then abandoned. Since he was in charge of the 🧪 experiments, he was blamed for the accident.

Prior to the temporal leap, he was focused on creating and developing the Pacifista. It was based upon the body of Bartholomew Bear as well as the powers and abilities of Pika Pika.

Sabaody Saga

He had completed the conversion prior to the war for supremacy. Bartholomew Bear was transformed into a Pacifist, PX-0. However, at the request of his creator, he programmed him in order to protect the Thousand Sunny in the absence or incapacity of the crew.

Reverie Saga

Vegapunk, an invention which Issho claims is so powerful, it can replace the Fleet of Seven.

• Vegapunk is similar to Leonardo da Vinci. Contemporaries consider him to be a pioneer of his age. Some historians even go so far as to say that Leonardo da Vinci was five centuries ahead of his time.
