Yosuke Hirata is currently a second-year student at Advanced Nurturing High School. He was seated in the second row on the left, after Kei Karuizawa, and was appointed class representative at the start of the series.

He is considered one of the many high school students in his class. He’s also a member in good standing of the Soccer Club. He has exceptional grades that make him worthy of being an elite member. However, he was placed in Class D due to unknown reasons.

PRESENTATION OF Hirata Yoursuke

Appearance

Yōsuke is a young man of average height with blonde hair and brown eyes. While he is usually seen wearing the school uniform, he was also seen outside of school in a striped shirt. This is what he wore when he and Kei Karauizawa met Suzune Horikita during summer break.

Character

Yōsuke exudes a very mature and pleasant vibe in the presence of other people and isn’t seen getting mad. His natural warmth has led the majority of the class to recognize him as their class advisor. He won the respect of the entire class and attracted the attention of several women.

Kei Karuizawa was the one where he agreed to a relationship with her to protect her from any bullying. He was able to empathize with her and saw that her trauma in middle school could recur in high school. Therefore, he allowed her to use his popularity to protect her against bullies.

Hirata radiates his thoughtfulness often. For example, he covered for Kiyotaka Ayanokōji after he discovered Karuizawa’s underwear on him, believing his explanation of not being the thief as he would not do such a thing, despite not knowing him well or having proof to show otherwise.

He has enough diplomatic and management skills to be able to convince everyone after a brief argument about provision and points.

Despite all the positive qualities he displays in his class, it is possible for him to become susceptible to cracking under stress. He was shocked to discover that the survival book had been burnt and was so horrified by the result, that he couldn’t understand what caused it. When Kiyotaka said that his class needed help, he snapped and told him to give them the orders.

He’ll be extremely naive in certain situations, as he was the one who defended Yamauchi against his classmates after it was discovered that he had betrayed them for Class B and was trying to expel Kiyotaka. He didn’t know how much power he actually has and Horikita advised him that he would give his criticism vote for her. This was because Yamauchi was interrupting their class tranquility by unceasingly questioning Yamauchi.

Yamauchi was considered the least useful member of their class and a traitor. However, he advised the class to vote against him instead. This might lead to expulsion.

He has gone against his class more than once and openly showed his dissatisfaction and anger to his classmates after he couldn’t deal with all the anxiety bottled up in himself. Kiyotaka reaffirmed his failings unabashedly on one occasion and encouraged him to quit looking for excuses.

This caused him to pause and realize his mistakes, while also laughing with Kiyotaka because he was being insensitive. In the light novels, it’s revealed that his personality stems from the guilt of abandoning his childhood good friend who suffered from severe bullying without Yōsuke being there. He has used this knowledge to try and resolve problems using another method rather than preventing them, even if it’s not the best.

Plot

In the anime’s debut, Yōsuke, like the other first years, listened to the speech given by Manabu Horikita, the Student Council President welcoming them to the Advanced Nurturing High School.

As he was waiting for their teacher, he asked Class D to introduce himself. He started by giving his name, and then describing how he did each sport. Then he said that he wanted to apply for the soccer club.

Other people followed his lead, introducing themselves in turn until Ken Sudō cut in, remarking how infantile it was before their teacher Sae Chabashira walked in and started class. He was just like the rest of his class.

He was shocked at their initial 100,000 points but was actually confused as to why they did NOT receive any the next month. Sae then presented an additional explanation to the points system and why it is deemed as Class D.

At the beginning of Episode 2 of the anime, Yōsuke was seen hanging together with his class at the pool, getting particularly close with Kei Karuizawa. He is often seen behind the scenes or associating with Kei in many episodes. It has been shown that they were together speaking to Suzune Horikita outside, long before Kei dragged them away.

In the course of the school cruise, Yōsuke formally met Kiyotaka Ayanokōji on the cruise and tried to make conversation before revealing he needed his help in getting Suzune to be more involved with the class socially and academically. Onshore together with the rest of the class, the purpose of the cruise was revealed; to hold a one-week survival test with an chance to gain points for overtaking higher classes.

Setting out on a Deserted Island, Yōsuke collectively together with his classmates discussed how to use their S-Points sparingly to gain more class points at the end of the examination.

After the camp was set up and Kei’s underwear is stolen, Yōsuke searched the boys for them and when searching Kiyotaka, he found the underwear on him (after Ike had given them to him). He covered for him for the occasion, much to the shock of the latter.

In the evening, Kiyotaka questioned his motives for not revealing the truth, with Yōsuke asking if he was the one who stole them, but as Kiyotaka denied it, Yōsuke believed him, disclosing he did not think he was the type of man to do that kind of thing.

When the camp confronted a problem after the survival book is burned, Yōsuke is left in despair as he broke down, unable to process why misfortune was befalling the camp. Kiyotaka snapped him out of it, which further motivated him to spend more and bring the camp under control.

Physical Skills

Yōsuke hasn’t been shown to do much by way of physical strength or brute force, but he has mentioned that he plays every sport possible and tried out for the school soccer club.

Learning Skills

Yōsuke has demonstrated exceptional grades good enough to put him into the upper classes, but presently unknown factors in the anime led to him being put in Class D.

Mental Skills

Yōsuke has demonstrated numerous times that he possesses a talent in leading others, becoming one of Class D’s central figures and class representative. In the midst of the special island survival test, he further proved his expertise.

While he was able to gather as many points as possible for his class using sound methods, it was not enough. The other classes were better. They could have lost if they weren’t for Kiyotaka’s intervention, which shows that he also has limitations to his skills.

He has demonstrated that he can recover quickly from stress, but not before he cracks under pressure.

Yōsuke is a pleasant young man, being one of the most sociable and kind people in Class 1-D. His kind nature has allowed him to be elected as one of the class representatives.

Kei Karuizawa

Yōsuke appears to have a close relationship with Kei as when school first started, she cheered on his idea of the class introducing themselves. They appear to have become a couple after a few days of school.

In reality, they are just pretending to be in an intimate relationship so Kei doesn’t get bullied in school. Nevertheless, it is proven he does look after her as when Kei’s underwear is stolen, Yōsuke searches the boys for them although he covers for Kiyotaka after discovering them on him; he asks for the panties as he’ll suffer less being Kei’s “boyfriend”.

She seems to believe him, as she chose him to be part of the guards for boys after the women requested that the boys be separated from the women.

As Suzune suggested that he might be mischievous while acting as a guard, she again defended him. Nevertheless, she did see Suzune’s point and went along with the latter’s choice to make Kiyotaka a guard as well to control Yōsuke.

Kiyotaka Ayanokōji

Yōsuke is among the few people in Class D to have any interaction with Kiyotaka. They first met when Class D started to introduce themselves and Yōsuke applauded him for at least trying to make a good impression after he messed up somewhat.

In the months after this, they barely interact but during the cruise Yōsuke tries to get Kiyotaka to help him get Suzune to open up and get him to socialize with the rest of the class.

He and Kiyotaka collaborate in the preparation of camp issues during the survival test. Hirata searches for Karuizawa’s underwear and finds them on Kiyotaka. Ike placed them on him so he covered for the shock of the latter. Kiyotaka quickly questioned him on covering for him as Yōsuke reveals he knows that Kiyotaka would not do such a thing.

This is because he trusts him up to a certain level, despite not understanding him. When the women put Yōsuke on guard duty, Suzune had nominated Kiyotaka as another guard to keep watch on him. This choice was accepted by Yōsuke who tried to lift the spirits of Kiyotaka after he complained about being a last resort.

Before the examination was over, Kiyotaka informed Hirata about Ibuki as well as Suzune. He then fell into despair at the class’s failings. Ayanokōji quickly requested for a favor which was to make him the leader and advised Yōsuke the other class leaders while giving Suzune credit.

His actions allowed the class to succeed and relieved Hirata who had no idea of Ayanokōji’s role. Unknown to him, Kiyotaka reveals that he does not acknowledge him as an ally, but merely only a pawn for him to win.
