Before the founding of the Phantom Troupe, Kuroro never wore a coat, nor did he put his hair back. His spider tattoo is located on his right arm in the 1999 anime.

He seems to be a born leader, able to hold the Phantom Troupe together despite the volatile personalities that make it up, and is good at strategies. The only people Kuroro seems to care about are his colleagues from the Phantom Troupe. When Kuroro reads Neon’s prophecy which contains Uvogin’s death, he cries for him. He later orchestrates a massacre of Mafia members considering it a requiem to his fallen comrade. Furthermore, he shows no fear of his own death, which he even anticipates. Senritsu said his heartbeat sounded like he was happy living next to death. For Kuroro, the Phantom Troupe is more important than his own life.
He once pointed out in a group meeting that the survival of the group comes before the welfare of the leader. To paraphrase it, the Spider’s head is just another limb that can be sacrificed for the Spider’s survival. Despite this, he is cold-blooded and an inhumane murderer, he and all members of the squad commit crimes without the slightest remorse, such as slaughtering the Kuruta clan to get their eyes back, and using his Indoor ability Fish on a helpless a**assin reflects his sadistic nature.

Very little is known about Kuroro’s past except that he is from the Shooting Star, a dump town inhabited by outcasts. The people who live there do not exist in any official records and the existence of the town itself is known to very few people. In the past, he formed the Phantom Troupe with six other Shooting Star residents and then left town.
Later, the brigade was joined by several members, in accordance with Kuroro’s idea of a group comprising exactly 13 members, including himself. It is unknown when and what the exact circumstances of the fight between Kuroro and Silva Zoldik are.
Story Kuroro HxH
York Shin City ARC
Kuroro is first seen at a meeting of the Ghost Brigade in an abandoned area of town on August 31. He orders the Squad to steal all the mafia’s underground auction items and eliminate anyone who gets in their way. On the evening of September 1, Kuroro, Phinks, Korutopi, Bonorenof, Pakunoda, and Hisoka stay in their lair, while the other seven members sneak into the building where the auction was taking place and kill all the mobsters and customers who are there, only to find an empty chest, as the items have already been moved to another location a few hours before they arrived.
On the way home in a hot air balloon, Uvogin calls Kuroro by phone, saying he suspects there is a traitor in the Brigade. Kuroro reasons with him saying that there is an informant, but that person is not among them. He then tells Uvogin and the others to cause a great disturbance to attract the Shadow Beasts, one of which, the Owl nicknamed Fukuro, who removed the auctioned items. After the order, Uvogin slaughters mobsters and four Shadow Beasts in the desert, but he is captured by Kurapika soon after.
Five other members of the Brigade immediately set off in pursuit until they are stopped in the way by the other shadow beasts. They kill all of these men except the Owl, whom they capture and successfully obtain the auction items. Around midnight, they find the place where Uvogin is being held prisoner and free him after killing Darzolne. However, Uvogin insists on finding the warp user, Kurapika, alone for revenge, which will lead to his death at the hands of Kurapika in the Goruto Desert in the early hours of September 2.
On September 3, through an image of Neon Nostrad, uploaded to the Hunters’ website, Kuroro finds her and approaches her, who has escaped her bodyguards to attend the underground auction against her will. from his father. After helping her into the building, he asks her for a prediction of her future, which she happily does. Upon reading the prophecy, he cries because it mentions Uvogin’s death. Near the start of the auction, he knocks Neon out with a quick kick to the back of his neck and uses it as an excuse to get to the upper floors.
He then kills hitmen hired by the Mafia with ease while his other comrades slaughter the 2,000 Mafiosos guarding the building.
During the Phantom Troupe’s retaliatory attack, Kuroro is cornered in the building’s basement by two elite a**assins, Zeno and Silva Zoldik. Noticing that Zeno is an incredible fighter, Kuroro fights them with the intention of stealing their abilities. However, Zeno sees through his actions and manages to pin him against the wall while Silva launches two huge spheres of his aura at them, causing a loud explosion that causes everything around them to collapse.
Just before the Zoldiks finish him off, Irumi Zoldik calls them and tells them that the Ten Godfathers have been eliminated in a mission whose client is Kuroro. As their clients are dead, they stop the fight having no more targets. Zeno will explain later that they don’t kill for fun.
Kuroro then calls the other members, telling them not to touch the ambulance transporting Neon to the hospital and to go ahead with the plan, where they use Korutopi’s ability to trick the Mafia with fake corpses of five members, taking the real items and selling their copies in the postponed underground auction on the 10th floor of the building.
After that, Kuroro and the other members return to their hideout and celebrate their victory. The next day, September 4, Kuroro orders the Brigade to leave YorkShin City overnight, but Nobunaga insists they find Kurapika. In order to persuade Nobunaga, he uses Lovely Ghost Writer which he stole from Neon to make prophecies about Nobunaga and some other members, that 5 of them will die if they stay in YorkShin City within the next 2 weeks.
They then intend to return to the Shooting Star to avoid this prospect, but Hisoka alters his own prophecy with his Surprise texture and manipulates the entire group into staying in York Shin City so he can get the chance to fight against Kuroro.
Later, Kuroro is able to deduce that Kurapika is one of Neon’s bodyguards, and thanks to a pair of fake Scarlet Eyes they sold the day before, they know that Kurapika and the other bodyguards are being hosted. at the Hotel Beitacle, 2.5 km from the hideout.
Kuroro orders Korutopi, Machi, Nobunaga, Pakunoda, and Shizuku to go with him to the hotel. On the way, noticing that they are followed by 2 people, he tells Korutopi, Nobunaga and Pakunoda to go ahead while he, Machi and Shizuku stay behind. They then capture Gon and Killua again. Meanwhile, Pakunoda and the other two are able to learn Kurapika’s name and face after Sukuwara is captured and killed. Kuroro, Machi and Shizuku bring the two children to the hotel and meet up with Pakunoda’s group in the hall.
He tells Pakunoda to check their memories again, but before she can reveal what she learned about Kurapika, a power outage suddenly occurs, allowing Gon and Killua to break free from their grip. Machi and Nobunaga then easily take them back despite the total darkness. However, when the light returns, they realize that Kuroro has been captured by Kurapika.
Phinks, Feitan and Sharnalk soon arrive at the hotel. They then receive a call from Kurapika, who tells them not to follow him, not to hurt the hostages, and to give the phone to Pakunoda.
He then tells Pakunoda to go to Ringon Airport alone to negotiate the terms of a hostage swap and the other members must return to their hideout. Kuroro, who is sitting next to Kurapika in the back seat of a car, is then beaten up, but he discovers that Kurapika favors his friends first, which he considers a vital weakness, so he hopes that Paku and d other members will come to the airport together. Indeed, Phinks, Feitan and Sharnalk try to follow Pakunoda, but Nobunaga stops them for fear that Kuroro will be killed, leading to a quarrel between Nobunaga and Phinks.
When Kurapika and Pakunoda come to the airport, he binds Kuroro and Pakunoda’s hearts with Judgment Chain, forbidding them from using Nen and communicating with other members, and tells him to come to the exchange site with Gon and Killua before midnight, to which she agrees. After returning to the hideout, Paku tells the others the terms. Phinks gets so angry that he wants to get rid of the kids and then chase after Kurapika but Machi and Korutopi disagree with him.
They nearly start a fight with Phinks and Feitan, who thinks they and the others are being manipulated by Kurapika, until the feud is broken up by Gon. Phinks eventually agrees to let Pakunoda go alone after Franklin tells him that if he continues to be stubborn, the Brigade may disintegrate. Just before the exchange, Hisoka suddenly appears and threatens to kill the children if he can’t come with Pakunoda to fight Kuroro. Kurapika has no choice, and lets him go to the trading site with them.
When Kuroro is finally freed, Hisoka reveals that he was never a true member of the Brigade and challenges him to a duel. Seeing this, Kuroro laughs and tells Hisoka that there is no point in fighting him now, because Judgment Chain has rendered him unable to use Nen on pain of death. Hisoka, having no interest in broken toys, lets him go. Kuroro, staying put, aims East in order to fulfill Neon’s prophecy.
Greed Island ARC
The destination to the east, according to the prophecy is later revealed to be Greed Island, the most likely place to find a Nen exorcist to neutralize Kurapika’s chain. Kuroro is somehow able to obtain a copy of the game and recruits Hisoka to enter in his place since the game requires the use of Nen.
Hisoka accepts for the chance to fight Kuroro once his nen is restored. An Exorcist is then found and recruited by Hisoka and the other members of the Phantom Troupe, however, it is still unclear whether or not Kurapika’s Judgment Chain has been removed from Kuroro’s heart.
Dark Continent ARC
Kuroro is found as a floor master at the Celestial Tower in a fight to the death against Hisoka. He shows him new abilities that he has acquired, in particular those of Sharnalk and Korutopi that they lent him. Kuroro is victorious and exits the Celestial Tower thinking he killed Hisoka (but he didn’t). to take advantage of it to travel in the dark continent. Shortly after this phone conversation, Sharnalk and Korutopi are killed by Hisoka. Later Kuroro manages to board the Black Whale 1 and is seen sitting in a corner of the lowest floor.
He looks ugly and sinister, probably from knowing about the Sharnalk and Korutopi murders. On August 9, he meets Machi who suggests that he flip a coin to see who would kill Hisoka. Kuroro refuses because it is not a question of settling a conflict between members since they all agree to end the magician. Kuroro is then seen with the entire Ghost Squad and recap on their unsuccessful search to find Hisoka.
Kuroro asks new member Illumi to introduce himself. It is then that a mafia group approaches the brigade and asks them to change places. Kuroro refuses at first, then complies. As he departs Phinks remarks that there must be treasure on board, but Kuroro makes Hisoka the priority of the squad. Only after killing him can they “celebrate”. The spiders then scatter to look for Hisoka.
Skills and competences
Kuroro is a monstrous fighter, being the leader of the Phantom Troupe and recognized as the strongest member. He was able to fight against Silva and Zeno Zoldik, two extremely skilled a**assins, at the same time, without leaving any openings for the former, but he was unable to cause significant damage to either of them not being all-out. in his fight and wanting to steal his opponents’ abilities. In the past, he survived a confrontation with Silva Zoldik, while in the present his abilities rival those of Zeno Zoldik.
His fighting style is likely one that combines speed with deadly precision. His high level of intelligence helps him, making him capable of exploiting enemy weak points. He is able to kill skilled warriors with just a pen, sometimes even staying hidden with the Zetsu, thus being impervious to Nen. When put in a difficult situation, he fights with a poisoned knife, 0.1 mg of the toxin of which can paralyze a whale. However, he has a certain tendency to hold back when his opponent has an interesting ability, so he can steal it.
Zeno said that Kuroro would have lost against him, but he adds that if he had fought seriously, the result would have been different.
Nen
Kuroro is a Specialization user, like Kurapika (when his eyes turn scarlet); it is a combination of the other five types, but in a way that a normal Nen user cannot use. Kuroro’s Nen ability is called Skill Hunter (Dao Zei noJi Yi (sukiruhanta) Bandit’s Secret). It allows him to steal other people’s hatsu and use them as his own using a book known as “Bandit’s Secret”. The victim, of course, no longer has access to his ability. The flight takes place under strict conditions:
- He must witness Nen’s ability with his own eyes.
- He must ask questions about capacity and be answered by the victim.
- The palm of his victim must touch the handprint on the cover of Bandit’s Secret.
- All of the above must be done in one hour.
To use one of the stolen abilities, he first evokes the bandit’s secret and turns to the page of the desired ability. When using a skill, Kuroro must go to the page and the book must stay open in his right hand; this means he can have access to one chosen ability at a time. Also, an ability disappears from the book if its previous owner dies. Zeno correctly guessed that he has to endure 4-5 trials before he can steal an ability. Other than that, he is a very skilled Nen user.
Increased Strength: Kuroro is placed seventh himself in the standoff with the rest of the Brigade. However, its rank is excellent, as Specialization users are the weakest when using Reinforcement skills. He is nonetheless capable of decapitating a normal human with one hand and piercing the skull of his opponents with an ordinary pen.
Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Kuroro was able to fight Zeno and Silva simultaneously, evade and protect against their powerful attacks. In the 2011 anime, he disappeared and fatally collided with one of the strongest a**assins hired by the mafia without the latter noticing. He struck with his hand on the nape of Neon Nostrad’s head without anyone in the room or looking at the surveillance monitors seeing a glimpse of the movement.
As shown in the 2011 anime, Kuroro can easily grab and throw knives mid-air. Enhanced Agility: Kuroro can run around the sides of buildings, and easily horizontally transition from one to another. He also skillfully dodged a lot of Zeno’s long range attacks. High Intelligence: Despite his young age, Kuroro is the leader of the Phantom Troupe, Class A. His plans generally go smoothly, and has shown to be both proficient and intuitive.
He managed to fool the entire Mafia into thinking that he and four of his comrades were dead. He managed to predict the framework of the “Chain User” strategy for his revenge, but was foiled by Kurapika and Hisoka. He has complete dominion over his emotions, as demonstrated by his capture by Kurapika.
In the fight against the Zoldiks, he focused on stealing Zeno’s ability in the middle of the fight and leaving no openings for Silva to exploit, proving to be an effective multi-tasker. Master of Knife Handling: The way he managed to injure Silva’s arm with a knife is proof of his skills. Also, he managed to kill several skilled Nen users by wielding only a normal pen.

- Kuroro ranked fourth in the second character popularity survey, and eighth in the third character popularity survey conducted by Weekly Shonen Jump.
- Kuroro’s flight abilities are similar to Yu Yu Hakusho’s Rando, but the conditions they need to steal the abilities are opposite; Rando needs to kill his victims with the objective of stealing his powers, while Kuroro needs to keep his victims alive; otherwise, he cannot use his abilities.
- In the 1999 series, Kuroro has the spider tattoo, without a number inside, in his right arm. In the manga and the 2011 series, however, he does not have the tattoo.
- Kuroro shares similarities with Shinobu Sensui. A villain in Togashi’s Yu Yu Hakusho series:
- Both are the leaders of their gang.
- Both are the smartest and politeest in their gang.
- Both have religious references. Sensui is known as the Black Angel, Kuroro has a cross on his forehead and an inverted cross on his coat. Also the fact that Kuroro’s name in English is << Lucilfer >> is only one letter more than << Lucifer >>.
