In Aot, Onyankopon (Japanese: オニャンコポン Onyankopon?) is an Anti-Marleyan Mercenary and an associate member of the Survey Corps as a pilot. In his first appearance during the Battle of Revelio, he drives the Corps’ airship alongside Hange Zoë and Armin Arlert. It is later learned that he is one of the Anti-Marleyan Mercenaries, devoted to the Eldian cause.

In Aot, Onyankopon is a medium-sized man with relatively dark skin and a standard military haircut. He is dressed in a uniform quite similar to that of the Marleyan Warriors, but with two black stripes running down his torso.

PERSONALITY Onyankopon Aot
In Aot, Onyankopon is devoted to the Eldian cause, as evidenced by his alliance with the Survey Corps. He also shows a belief in a God who created the world, whom he calls “the creator”.
Patient and calm, it was he who explained the principle of the port to the Eldians, who had no idea of this concept until then.
In reality his personality turns out to be more complex as the story unfolds. It is shown that he acted above all to free his country from the hold of Marley. For this he does not hesitate to betray the Survey Corps after having pretended to be on their side, while he has always remained loyal to Yelena even after learning that she had made the army officers ingest cerebrospinal fluid from the Beast Titan at their incus.
However, he is still a brave man, after having witnessed the savage execution of another Anti-Marleyan Mercenary by Floch Forster, he is the only mercenary to have refused to pledge allegiance to the new empire of Eldia proclaimed by the latter, which led to him being sentenced to death at the same time as his leader.

HISTORY Onyankopon Aot
PAST
When his country was invaded and then occupied by Marley, the young man was forcibly enlisted in its army. He rightly resented Marley. Later, he met Yelena, another soldier who claimed to be in the same situation. Later it was revealed that she was lying and that she was an ordinary Marleyan. Together with others, they formed a secret group to fight against Marley who had infiltrated his army and was sponsored by Zeke Yeager: the Anti-Marleyan Mercenaries.

YEARS 851-854
In 851, Onyankopon was part of Marley’s first scouting fleet on the Paradise coast. After his ship was ambushed by the Survey Corps, he mutinied with Yelena. The mutiny went like this: the ship was blocked by the Attack Titan and held at gunpoint by its soldiers. Major Hange, who had taken Nicolo, the cook, hostage, humorously asked them to surrender. The captain of the crew refused and was about to shoot the latter when Yelena blew his brains out. At that moment, Onyankopon took advantage of the shock to hold the other sailors at gunpoint and order them to disarm. They informed Hange Zoë and Levi Ackerman of the situation. A coalition of countries, the Middle East Alliance, after learning of the loss of the Colossal Titan, had declared war on Marley, who could not immediately launch an operation against them. This gave them a respite. They also learned that their leader was none other than the owner of the Beast Titan and that it was he who sent them to them. Yelena, Onyankopon and the other Anti-Marleyan Mercenaries helped the Paradisians to develop, militarily by modernizing their weapons, but also civilly by building a port and a railroad. Onyankopon was the main contractor, assisted by a team of Marleyan engineers who were captured by the following scouting fleets, all of which were intercepted by the Survey Corps.
In 853, Onyankopon served as a guide during a visit to the mainland by the Tactical Squad and Major Hange, during which they met Kiyomi Azumabito and attended a speech by the spokesman for a pro-Eldian association at an international symposium. Most importantly, Eren went on the run to infiltrate the Marleyan army.

ARC OF THE MARLEYANS
In 854, he participated in the Battle of Revelio as an airship pilot. Armin later thought back with nostalgia to the Corps’ encounter with Onyankopon and the Anti-Marleyan Mercenaries, and the hope they had brought to the island. A hope for peace and prosperity, a victim, like Sasha Braus, of this deadly operation.

RETURN TO PARADISE ARC
In Aot, Onyankopon and the other mercenaries are arrested by Dot Pixis. Indeed, the authorities of Paradise suspect them of having brought the Yeager brothers into contact.
He is placed under house arrest where he quickly receives a visit from Hange Zoë. He expressed his bitterness about the treatment they were receiving from the Paradise authorities after having accomplished so much together over the previous three years. Hange regrets, but justifies the act by explaining the reason of their arrest: the secret meeting between Yelena and Eren. When she asks for information about her boss, Onyankopon confides in her about Yelena’s violent extremist personality, which she did not know. She tells him about the habit she had of coldly executing in front of her group with a bullet in the skull all those whom she thought capable of discovering their existence. When Hange asked him why Yelena had shown such a beautiful personality in Paradise, especially her empathy for the Marleyan prisoners, since she had insisted that they be left alive. Onyankopon speculated that she wanted to redeem her cruel past. Hange trusted her and even invited her to accompany them to investigate Yelena.
At the hearing following the fatal bombing of Generalissimo Darius Zackly, she defended him when he and the other volunteers came under suspicion. She claimed that Onyankopon was with them and that the other volunteers were prisoners. This soon proved to be true, as the culprits turned out to be Pro-Yeagers who had infiltrated the army.

Following this, they went to the restaurant where Niccolo and Griez, two Marleyan prisoners, were working. Hange suspected them of being accomplices of Yelena. Indeed, later Niccolo revealed that the food they had previously served to the army brass on Yelena’s orders most likely contained Zeke’s cerebrospinal fluid. On learning this Hange regarded Onyankopon with anger thinking that he had hidden it from her, this one swore that he was not aware of anything of that. She then ordered him to go and inform Armin Arlert and Mikasa Ackerman of the events. He is intercepted by Floch Forster and a group of Pro-Yeagers warned by Griez of the presence of Major Hange and his followers were in the restaurant. They arrest them all.
They are put under arrest at the military headquarters. Except him that one saw again at the side of Yelena to come to see them and Hange left to lead Floch to the place where Zeke was held. When Jean confronts him, this one assumes to support it fully and justifies his unworthy conduct towards them by pointing out that they had betrayed them first by leaving them locked up. Not elsewhere, he affirms that one should thank them for having modernized their country which without them would still be a century behind the rest of the world. Another confrontation breaks out between Griez and Niccolo about Sasha. Griez still conditioned by the racist propaganda of Marley against the Eldians contrary to Niccolo, judges the love that this one carried to Sasha Braus against nature. After his third insult against Sasha as he was about to say that she had gotten the death she deserved, to the horror of them all they saw Yelena blow her brains out without warning, revealing the Yelena that Onyankopon had described to Hange. He cleaned up around the corpse with another comrade present and put it on a stretcher. After Yelena told the prisoners about Zeke’s real plan, they were warned by a soldier that an intruder had been captured in the fortress. He then left with Yelena. They found a nasty surprise, a confident Pieck Finger brought to the roof. This one tried to trap Eren to make him devour Porco Galliard in the form of the Jaw Titan which had also infiltrated and to their great horror emerged missing Eren. This was followed by the arrival of an army of Marleyan airships to capture the Founding Titan and avenge Paradise’s attack on Revelio, heralding a new bloody battle, the Second Battle of Shiganshina.
In the middle of the battle, Onyankopon, faced with the critical turn that the fight was taking, freed the soldiers who were prisoners of the Pro-Yeagers, who had arrived at the cell of the Tactical Squad, and once freed Connie Springer attacked him violently. This one did not digest his previous betrayal, added to those of Annie Leonhart, Bertholdt Hoover, Reiner Braun and Eren Yeager, it was for him the one too much. Armin intervened to calm his friend. Onyankopon swore to them that he knew nothing about the wine, nor about Yelena and Zeke Yeager’s sterilization project. That he would not have approved of the latter, since children are the future. Nevertheless, when Jean Kirstein pointed out that it would be foolish to go to Zeke and Eren’s aid knowing that they wanted them gone, Onyankopon took the opposite position, that he would help them in order to activate the Rumbling to annihilate the forces of the international coalition. However, he said that they would then oppose the second part of the plan, which was soft eradication. After Armin made it clear to his comrades that Eren would never accept this part of the plan, they agreed. Only they made it a condition that Onyankopon would release all the prisoners without any exception.
Later, when Zeke’s Titans attacked the army headquarters where he was with the other Anti-Marleyan Mercenaries, he tried to protect Yelena. Yelena was shocked that Zeke had lost control of the situation or was no longer protecting them, and she stood by the window, not realizing that one of the titans was coming at them. They were saved by the elimination of the titans by a group of soldiers under the orders of Jean. After that, he learned from Jean that Eren had activated the Rumbling to create a total genocide of humanity in the outside world. Bitterly, he realized that his country was also going to be destroyed and his family exterminated. He was interrupted by Floch, with a head injury, supported by Wim, who announced that the Anti-Marleyan Mercenaries were all under arrest.
