Overview Demon Slayer Mark

Demon Slayers with the Demon Slayer Corps are able to get a tattoo, scar, or birthmark. It is similar to the crests demons have. These marks are called Demon Slayer Marks. Each Demon Slayer mark is unique and relates to the Breathing Style.

Although the origin of the Demon Slayer Mark remains a mystery, Yoriichi Tsugikuni was the first Breathing Technique user to be able to use it. The Mark’s catalyst-like effect caused almost all other swordsmen to awaken their Demon Slayer Marks during the Sengoku Era.

Story Demon Slayer Mark

According to legend, the Demon Slayer mark has been heard since then, and was awakened later by other Demon Slayers. This would eventually lay the foundation for “Golden Era,” which is when the Demon Slayers were within inches of killing Muzan Kibutsuji.

Demon Slayer Marks vanished for a while due to the numerous times that the Demon Slayer Corps almost was annihilated. However, it returned on Tanjiro Kamado and then, the Hashira, who resonated with his mark.

Curse of the Demon Slayer Mark

Curse of the Demon Slayer Mark

The Demon Slayer mark comes with its own costs. Demon Slayers who awaken the Demon Slayer mark are believed to die at the age of 25. Kokushibo said that even though they have more power, the strain it puts on their bodies reduces their lifespan. This was also stated previously by Shinobu who claimed that the conditions to unlock it were deadly even for Hashira. Gyomei Himejima described the curse’s effects in a conversation Muichiro Tokito had with Gyomei Himejima. She said that the curse is like “paying one’s life in advance in exchange for a better physique”.

Yoriichi, Kokushibo and others have shown that there are ways to escape the curse. Yoriichi lived to 85 years, but this was possible due to the curse being undiscovered. Kokushibo on the other side, however, was able to escape the curse and become immortal by turning into a Demon.

Even though a Demon Slayer has reached 25, it is still possible to awaken that mark. This is evident when Gyomei activates the mark and receives the benefits, even though she is not yet 25. Kokushibo predicted that Gyomei would die within hours of activating the mark. Although Kokushibo was correct in his prediction, it is not known if Gyomei died as a result of the curse.

It is possible that the curse is simply superstition due to its inconsistency. It is possible that it does not exist, but there are no conclusive proofs.
